A week from tomorrow, we’ll be downing spaetzle and bratwurst over farm trivia at The Biergarten ! The Biergarten is generously donating a portion of the night’s sales to MFFM. Come mingle with the local farmers’ market community, learn about our food access work, and indulge in some fun and games. A certain special guest trivia emcee will kick it off at 6pm. Be sure to check out the menu if you haven’t been yet—Old World-inspired fare sourced from real Maine farms and producers. See you there!

Senior FarmShare signups are underway at 30 farmers’ markets around the state! Enthusiasm for fresh, local produce is as strong as ever in places like Houlton, Maine, where our stellar Info Booth team enrolled 131 seniors on the first Saturday of the season. After yesterday’s market, that number is up to nearly 200. Each participant gets $50 in vouchers to spend on any fresh fruit, vegetables, cut herbs, and honey in the farmers market, and vendors get paid the full retail price through our payment systems. More Mainers enjoy fantastic summer produce, farmers see a boost in sales, and community relationships are strengthened through in-person shopping at the farmers’ market.

We partner with the Maine Department of Ag to leverage federal nutrition funding to help cover the cost of Maine Senior FarmShare. We’ve been working on voucher printing, materials distribution, and staff and volunteer training all spring. Seeing the joy it brings to seniors around the state is a high point of our year.

A visit to the Pittsfield Farmers’ Market to welcome them to the Maine Harvest Bucks program! Now you can spend SNAP/EBT and earn bonus bucks for more fruits, vegetables, and seedlings that produce food. This little market features a beautiful downtown location, plenty of easy parking, and a great selection of groceries to start your week off right—check out our haul in the last pic! There’s high-quality meat, fresh eggs, organic vegetables and plants, canned goods and fruit preserves, maple syrup, baked goods, herbal tea, soap and skincare, and lots more!
Smaller, weekday farmers’ markets may not have the fanfare of the weekend or city ones, but they are convenient and important sites for smaller farm businesses to get their start. There’s often more opportunity to stop and learn about your food through conversation, too. Now that so much fresh produce is coming into season, maybe you’d like to do a bi-weekly shop. See how many markets are in your radius by browsing the list on our website.
The Pittsfield Farmers’ Market is every Monday afternoon, rain or shine, 2pm-6pm, at the corner of Hathorn Park. Walkable from downtown and just a mile off the highway, they accept cash, credit/debit, SNAP/EBT, Maine Harvest Bucks, Bumper Crop, and eWIC.

Come enjoy this beautiful space from 5-7pm and help throw or decorate pottery that we’ll use to raise money for our low-income food access programs, Maine Harvest Bucks and Maine Senior FarmShare. It’s June, and that means Senior FarmShare signups are open for enrollment at more than 30 farmers’ markets!

In 2023, we introduced a new pilot program through partnership with the DACF’s Maine Senior FarmShare Program that expanded food access options for older adults. 2026 is our fourth year of running the new market-wide version of Maine Senior FarmShare. In the farmers’ market version, individual farmers are relieved of administrative work, and seniors enjoy more choice in how to spend their share. More older Mainers get to enjoy first-quality summer produce, and farmers gain a boost in direct sales at full retail value.

How it Works:
Maine Senior FarmShare participants sign up at a farmers’ market Info Booth and receive $50 in vouchers to spend on fruit, vegetables, cut herbs, or honey at that farmers’ market. Sign up is simple and you do not need to bring any paperwork. Each person can get one share per year, and your vouchers are to spend at the market where you signed up. No change is given for the $1 and $5 vouchers. All farmers have to do is redeem the vouchers with the Info Booth, and they receive full payment through MFFM.

Were you in the Head of Falls parking lot yesterday and wondering what kind of weird trunk sale was setting up north of the farmers’ market? Well, that was just us, doing our annual Central Maine meetup to swap supplies for Info Booths! We went through checklists and boxes of signage, brochures, outreach pamphlets, vouchers, and some exciting new swag for our Friends of Maine Farmers’ Markets membership. There were stacks and stacks of Maine Senior FarmShare vouchers—in-person signups at 30 participating farmers’ markets start in June! Sets of all this STUFF can now be deployed relay-style to Info Booths that run our Maine Harvest Bucks, Senior FarmShare, and Bumper Crop programs, from Kittery to Presque Isle, Steep Falls to Bar Harbor, and beyond. This is one of the more fun parts of the work we do to bring over $1million in direct, full price retail sales to market vendors each year by expanding food access .

Our team works remotely, and is spread out from Kingman to Freeport, so any chance to meet up in person is always a little chaotic with all we have to catch up on. Thanks for hosting us and providing excellent ingredients for our staff snack! It was great to see so many friends of MFFM: Tom, a founder, longtime Board Member, and the OG farmers’ market content creator! Eileen, our Board Chair! Gina, one of our newest Info Booth teammates! Emilie, a welcome blast from the past! And many rockstar vendors, including Rachel and Danny who have helped with recent nutrition program advocacy wins. As amazing as the food is, the best thing about farmers’ markets is the people 💚

Days like this we feel so lucky to be doing this work alongside you all to keep Maine farmers’ markets growing and thriving.

Sarah Tompkins of Fine Line Farm is not only an amazing farmer and market vendor, she is also a first responder and Chief of Searsmont Rescue. On May 15, she was severely injured in the Robbins Lumber Mill explosion while helping others. She faces a long, expensive recovery, and her family and farm crew will need all the support we can muster.

Sarah is a selfless, hardworking farmer and community member. Let’s show up for her - please share and consider a donation of any amount if you’re able:
