When families say things aren't working, it’s often because the focus has been on behavior, not the problem beneath it.
Example: “Difficulty putting away pool toys after swimming.”
Clarity + collaboration = change.

"We've tried everything."

Many families arrive at CPS after trying rewards, reminders, consequences, and punishments.

Start with unsolved problems.
Instead of describing a student's behavior, identify the specific expectation they're having difficulty meeting.
Examples:
"Difficulty following the morning classroom arrival routine." "Difficulty beginning independent writing after the class mini-lesson."
"Difficulty completing a multi-step math assignment independently."
The more specific the expectation, the clearer your roadmap for understanding what's getting in the way and solving the problem proactively.
Specificity creates clarity.

Teacher: “They’re not engaged.”
Student: “I don’t know where to start.”

Not: “Summer routines are off”
Try: “Difficulty getting dressed before leaving the house.”

Ask: What makes it hard? What happens right before? What happens next? Tell me more.
