In this episode of The DMV Business Show, I sit down with Wade Milyard Jr., Founder of Fresh Step Laundry, to discuss his journey from serving as a police officer and Coast Guard member to launching a nonprofit dedicated to providing free mobile laundry services to the unhoused community in Frederick County Maryland.

Wade shares the inspiration behind Fresh Step, recounting a pivotal moment during his law enforcement career when he asked unhoused individuals how they did their laundry and realized the value of bringing such a service directly to those in need.

The conversation covers the challenges of retrofitting a bus to create a mobile laundry facility, the logistics of serving the community, and the importance of empathy and connection in his work.

He also touches on plans for expansion, including a focus on ensuring unhoused schoolchildren have clean clothes, and offer insights for anyone interested in giving back or starting a nonprofit of their own.

The episode is filled with stories of impact, personal growth, and the power of simply taking action to meet a community’s needs.

No Setbacks. Just Timing.

That door didn’t close because you weren’t good enough.

That opportunity didn’t pass you by because you failed.

That dream isn’t taking longer because you’re behind.

Sometimes life says “not yet” because there’s something you still need to become, learn, build, or survive.

What feels like a setback today might be redirection in disguise.

Keep going.

Keep preparing.

Keep believing.

Because the delay isn’t always denial.

Sometimes… it’s timing. ⏳

Your story isn’t over.

You’re just not at that chapter yet.

Sometimes, it’s not the big things that make a child’s heart happy. ❤️

It’s a clean pair of clothes.

It’s knowing that tonight, she gets to put on her favorite dress.

When this little girl found out she was going to have clean clothes to wear that night, her face lit up with a joy that said everything.

And when she realized she could wear her FAVORITE dress? 🥹

For some children, what we consider ordinary can feel extraordinary.

May we never take the simple blessings for granted.

And may every child have the chance to feel this kind of joy. ❤️

Sometimes, a clean dress isn't just a dress. It's hope. 👗

If this touched your heart, share it.

Someone out there may need the reminder that small acts of kindness can mean everything. ❤️

Doing a single load of wash and dry at a commercial laundromat averages $5.00 to $10.00 when accounting for soap and transportation. For someone living on an average daily income of under $15–$20, laundry can consume up to 30%–50% of daily funds, forcing a choice between food and clean clothes.

Please consider donating to Fresh Step Laundry to help us help those in need. Thank you!!

Empathy isn’t a weakness.

It’s strength.

In law enforcement, accountability matters but so does humanity.

You can enforce the law while treating people with dignity.

You can set boundaries without losing compassion.

You can hold someone accountable without forgetting they’re human.

And this applies to all of us.

Pause before judging.

Listen before reacting.

Choose compassion when you can.

You never know what battle someone is fighting behind the scenes.

Lead with empathy.

Stand for accountability.

Treat people with dignity.

Accountability

09/28/2026

When Wade Milyard Jr.,Founder of Fresh Step Laundry was still serving as a police officer in Frederick, he responded to a call at a campsite.

After resolving the situation, something unexpected happened: Wade felt a strong urge, which he describes as a voice from God to ask the unhoused individuals, “How do you do your laundry?”

The young woman he spoke to explained they washed their clothes in a nearby creek and then dried them on fence posts or tent stakes.

When Wade asked if they'd use a mobile laundry service if it came to them, her answer was an immediate yes.

That chance encounter sparked Wade's decision to found Fresh Step Laundry, bringing dignity or as he puts it, “clean clothes and smiles” to Frederick’s unhoused community through free mobile laundry service.

Sometimes, the simplest question can change countless lives.

Do not miss Wade's episode premiere on The DMV Business Show tomorrow Tuesday, September 29th!
