The Freedom Center The Freedom Center empowers people with disabilities to live independently, achieve their goals, and thrive in a barrier-free community.

The Freedom Center provides the five core services including, but not limited to:

•Individual and systems advocacy

•Information and referral

•Peer counseling

•Independent living skills training to people with disabilities of all ages and disabilities

•Transition Services

The Freedom Center provides support and services to people with disabilities in Frederick and Carroll Counties. Independen

t living services and supports include, but are not limited to, equal access, removal of physical and attitudinal barriers, the availability of affordable and accessible housing, availability of accessible transportation, availability of personal assistance services, and equal opportunities for employment. In addition, education and training that is necessary for living in a community and participating in community activities are offered as IL services. Services are designed to provide resources, training, counseling, or other assistance of substantial benefit in enhancing the independence, productivity, and quality of life of individuals with disabilities. Community awareness programs are available to enhance the understanding and integration of people with disabilities into the mainstream of life. Most importantly, this center includes other services that may be necessary to improve the ability of an individual with a significant disability to function, continue functioning, or move toward functioning independently in the his/her own home, in the family or community.

The Freedom Center representatives Deborah Walkin and Darren Braun attended the Senior Resource & Education Fair on May 28, 2026. We enjoyed connecting with attendees, sharing information about our services, and learning about additional community resources available to support our Consumers.

Deborah and Darren also shared information about The Freedom Center’s ILAT grant program, which helps individuals obtain assistive technology to support greater independence and meet daily living needs.

⭐️ Applications are still being accepted, but time is running out!

If you’ve been thinking about applying to the Maryland Youth Leadership Forum (MD YLF), this is your final opportunity.

MD-YLF is a 3-day leadership experience for high school juniors and seniors with disabilities who want to build confidence, strengthen self-advocacy skills, and start planning for life after high school.

Participants will:

- Stay on the campus of Towson University
- Take part in interactive sessions on leadership, disability history, career exploration, and independent living
- Connect with peers from across Maryland and build lasting friendships

Dates: June 25–27, 2026

Research Study Opportunity for Black Individuals with Disabilities

The Mid-Atlantic ADA Center, in collaboration with New Mexico State University, is conducting a research study to better understand the experiences, challenges, and benefits of self-advocacy among Black individuals with disabilities.

Participants may be eligible if they:
- Self-identify as Black
- Have a documented disability
- Are 18 years or older
- Speak English
- Live in the Mid-Atlantic region of the U.S.

Participants can receive compensation for each phase completed in the study.

This research aims to amplify lived experiences and support greater understanding and advocacy within the disability community.
