The Arc of Frederick County supports persons with developmental disabilities to obtain the services they need & want to become as independent as possible & to enjoy quality of life in our community. The Arc of Frederick County works to guarantee people with intellectual and developmental disabilities the same rights and opportunities enjoyed by other citizens. The Arc helps people exercise the right to be contributing members of society, to receive quality education, to be gainfully employed, to live in desirable homes, to have friends and families, and to direct their own lives.

Celebrating National Disability Employment Awareness Month, The Arc serves as an Employment Provider in partnership with the Division of Rehabilitation Services (DORS) and the Developmental Disabilities Administration (DDA). Transitioning Youth Students with Disabilities and their teams are encouraged to contact The Arc to lean how our individualized career supports, training programs, and ongoing assistance can help them reach their employment goals. Nic is in his second year of employment as a Lunch Monitor for Frederick County Public Schools where he enjoys working with students and supporting safety and fun in the school cafeteria. In recognition of National Disability Employment Awareness Month, The Arc celebrates the longstanding contributions people with disabilities make to our communities and the business partners who embrace inclusive hiring as a valued practice.
This December, Chris will celebrate 13 years of dedicated service to Wegmans! As part of Wegmans' Helping Hands team, Chris contributes to a tradition of friendly customer service, lending a helping hand to shoppers and making their experience a little easier.
The Arc applauds Chris for his years of commitment and thanks Wegmans for recognizing that a strong workforce is one that welcomes the talents, skills, and contributions of people of all abilities!

The Arc was thrilled when First Chime, an aviation catering service preparing exquisite cuisine, onboarded a graduate of our Kitchen and Hospitality Training Program this summer! Brandon is a full-time employee working with a creative team of professionals. Like a healthy, tasty, and beautifully presented meal, First Chime incorporates the talents of each employee to create an inclusive workforce where each person contributes to making their customers satisfied and happy!

James is a dedicated employee, celebrating a career of more than 10 years at Planet Fitness! As one of the longest-tenured maintenance employees, new staff shadow James when learning their jobs because he knows the routines and what needs to be done to keep the facility running smoothly. James’ responsibilities include keeping the facility clean, wiping down cardio and strength-training equipment, sanitizing the locker rooms, and taking care of trash removal. He works the overnight shift, so he has plenty of stories to tell about the things he has seen at Planet Fitness at 2:00 a.m.! James’ 10-plus years of employment are a great example of the value of having a reliable, experienced employee who takes pride in his work. His commitment to Planet Fitness and the relationships he has built with his coworkers and gym enthusiasts show how meaningful and successful employment can be when someone has the right opportunity and support.

The Arc was thrilled when Swirls contacted us to partner and interview candidates from our Kitchen and Hospitality Training Program. Cristina quickly joined Swirls' team, where leadership cultivates a workplace with natural supports built in so all are successful as they scoop up ice cream and more for the Frederick community!

Each October, The Arc joins The US Department of Labor to celebrate National Disability Employment Awareness Month to recognize the positive impact of people with disabilities in the American workforce! The Arc of Frederick County serves more than 70 people who are employed at more than 50 businesses in Frederick and Allegany Counties.
Building upon the investment school systems make in each student, The Arc supports students and adults with applying their passions, talents, and interests to the workforce. To accomplish this, The Arc starts by blending higher education, specialized training, and a variety of career assessment tools as we partner with each person. Skills are honed by creating resumes, completing mock interviews, and community exploration and discovery activities. Jobs are obtained as people present their skills with competence and confidence to employers. Ongoing support is provided to each person and each business to sustain employment and build natural supports!

The Arc has enjoyed celebrating the Direct Support Professionals in Allegany and Frederick Counties this month! Last night, we thanked our Frederick Direct Support Professionals who provide caring, kind support to people at home, work, and in their chosen third places! Direct Support Professionals have a butterfly effect in our communities as they assist people we serve and pass on lessons of inclusion!
