As the Williamson County Fair returns to Franklin next month, we're remembering the everyday people whose committee work and community spirit built local traditions that still bring us together today.

Newspaper archives from 1854–1855 show James H. Mallory (1818–1857), serving on committees of the Williamson County Agricultural and Mechanical Association, the very group that recruited members and announced plans for a County Fair back in 1855. Buried at Mallory Cemetery in Franklin, James H. later served as one of the Association's directors, too.

Today is Descendant's Day! Are you a descendant of John W. Mallory, Sr and Sarah "Sally" Mallory of Franklin, TN?

📍 1812: John W. Mallory, Sr moves to Franklin, TN (Williamson County).
📍 1825: John’s parents, Roger and Lucy Mallory, move from Northampton Co., Virginia to join him in Franklin, TN.
📍 Pre-Civil War (1830s–1850s): Many descendants moved, settling heavily in Haywood County, Tennessee; Montgomery County, Tennessee; Logan County, Kentucky and expanding into South Carolina and Texas.

Did you know that Descendants Day was founded in Nashville? 🌿 Celebrated on the last Sunday in June, it was launched by Nashville historic preservationist Charlie Howell in 1996. He founded this special day to remind us to honor our roots and consider the legacy we leave for future generations.

Join us at the Nashville City Cemetery on June 28 to celebrate Descendants Day in the city where it started! We hope to see you this special day!

We are saying goodbye today to the large Oak tree that has stood watch for about 200 years. The headstones have been covered to protect them from flying debris and sticky sap.

There’s a small cemetery in Franklin, Tennessee that most people drive past without a second glance. But inside those crumbling stone walls lies the grave of Roger Mallory, a Revolutionary War patriot who helped build this nation.

The dry-stacked stone walls that have protected this sacred ground for generations have collapsed in many areas. Without action, this piece of our local history may be lost forever.

We're raising $32,000 to restore the walls at Mallory Cemetery and begin work this fall 2026. Every dollar brings us one stone closer.

Are you looking for an outdoor community volunteer experience? Join us for light landscaping at Mallory Cemetery (behind Academy Sports) in Franklin on Saturday, April 11 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Bring gloves and if you have them; a w**d eater, rake and leaf blower.

Wear sunscreen, closed-toe shoes and comfortable clothes.

We’ll provide drinks and snacks.
