Firefighters face hazards long after an emergency ends, including repeated exposure to toxins that research has linked to an increased risk of Parkinson’s Disease. A bipartisan bill introduced by Jim Banks and Andy Kim would recognize Parkinson’s as a job-related illness for federal firefighters, helping them access benefits more quickly and with fewer administrative hurdles. The legislation aims to reduce the financial and emotional burden on firefighters and their families during treatment and recovery.

Fire fighters put their lives on the line every day, and the dangers don’t end when the fire is out. Research continues to show that repeated exposure to toxins on the job can significantly increase the risk of Parkinson’s Disease among fire fighters.

Senator Jim Banks and Senator Andy Kim have introduced the bipartisan Parkinson’s Protection for Firefighters Act to recognize Parkinson’s Disease as a job related illness for federal fire fighters.

Backed by the International Association of Fire Fighters, the bill would help fire fighters get quicker access to medical benefits, reduce red tape, and ease the financial and emotional strain on families while members focus on treatment and recovery.

Indiana has been one of the leaders in recognizing Parkinson’s as a presumptive illness for fire fighters, and this legislation is another step toward protecting those who dedicate their lives to protecting others.

“They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted;
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them…

…But where our desires are and our hopes profound,
Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight,
To the innermost heart of their own land they are known
As the stars are known to the Night;

As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust,
Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain;
As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness,
To the end, to the end, they remain.”

Fort Wayne Metro Professional Firefighters Local 124 is proud of our own Mack Neukam for assisting Pedals of Hope in using bicycles to help our community.

"I was approached by President Kabisch, who has been creating a relationship with an organization called Pedals of Hope, about a bicycle in need of repair for a gentleman. Firefighters on Wheels historically has focused on fixing kids’ bikes prior to summer break to ensure school age children have a safe, healthy summer. We utilized this program in this special case to fine tune, clean, lubricate, and get Ricky’s bike in riding shape." - Mack Neukam
