Earlier this month, SARDOC responded to a request for canine search support from the through Colorado Search and Rescue Association - CSAR . The first SARDOC K9 team on scene successfully located the missing individual.

After the search, one of our experienced handlers shared a simple but powerful reminder: “Always trust your dog.” It is a lesson that SARDOC teams reinforce through weekly training, even long after certification. During an active search, it is easy for our human minds to make assumptions or follow a story that may not be accurate. A search dog's nose, however, follows the facts. Simply put, the dog's nose knows best.

SARDOC search dog handlers are dedicated, unpaid volunteers who are passionate about helping reunite families with their missing loved ones. Your support helps us continue training, maintaining our K9 teams, and providing these critical services when they are needed most.

Earlier this spring, we had a great weekend putting our current cohort of Handlers‑in‑Training to the test on their mapping skills using CalTopo!

is a powerful mapping resource used by many of Colorado’s Backcountry Search & Rescue (BSAR) teams to coordinate safe, effective operations—and for good reason. Its detailed maps, customizable layers, and offline capability make it an excellent tool not just for SAR, but for anyone recreating in the backcountry.

Whether you’re hiking, skiing, trail running, or exploring somewhere new, CalTopo helps you better understand the terrain, plan smarter routes, and stay oriented when it matters most.

Congratulations to Caroline and Gwyn for passing the next step in the certification process! Caroline recently became a voting member of our SARDOC team. Her education in non-profit operations is helping us ramp up our grant procurements in 2026, strengthening our organization from top to bottom. Gwyn is just here for the reward - preferably a tug toy - after every successful training session. 😀
