Today, we honor Juneteenth, a day that commemorates freedom while reminding us of the importance of telling the full story of our shared history.

As interpreters, educators, and storytellers, we have a responsibility to embrace complexity, amplify overlooked voices, and create space for deeper understanding.

As NAI President Parker writes in the upcoming July/August issue of Legacy:
"To tell the whole story is not to betray America. It is to be a true patriot. It is to believe that this nation is strong enough to face itself. It is to trust that people can handle complexity."

This Juneteenth, may we continue the work of interpretation with honesty, care, and a commitment to ensuring more people can see themselves reflected in the stories we tell.

We're counting down the days until NAI 2026 registration opens! 🎉

To celebrate, we're sharing fun facts about our host city, Oakland, California!

Did you know? Oakland is known for its vibrant murals and political street art, with many pieces highlighting social justice themes.

One of the city's most iconic murals is located right on our conference venue and hotel, the Oakland Marriott City Center. Standing 190 feet tall, "Zero Hunger" by artist Victor Ash is one of just six murals across the United States created to raise awareness about world hunger.

Have you listened to the latest What's Up Interpreters episode?🎙️

Allie Elliott is an interpreter based in Midland, Michigan who brings together her background in biology and passion for people to create meaningful connections with the natural world. She works at the Chippewa Nature Center as an Interpretive Naturalist / Assistant Camp Director, where she focuses on youth programming and hands-on experiences that inspire curiosity, stewardship, and belonging in the outdoors. With a special interest in Michigan’s wetland ecosystems, Allie strives to make science accessible, engaging, and relevant for all audiences.

She is actively involved with NAI through the Young Professional Council and the Great Lakes Region, supporting connection, leadership, and growth for emerging professionals in the field. Outside of work, she enjoys exploring the outdoors with her husband, daughter, and two Bernese Mountain Dogs.
