First the requirement for a special White House app to be loaded on all federal employee’s cell phone. Now, a requirement to sign an NDA. Yes, federal IT devices should only be used for official business. But, is this taking things a step too far?

OPM Plans New, Government-Wide Nondisclosure Agreement Form

OPM plans to issue a new, government-wide agreement form for both current and newly hired federal employees in which they would have to agree not to disclose “confidential government information,” beyond their obligations to not disclose classified information.

That would cover “all non-public, confidential, or proprietary information, to include, but not be limited to, information relating to internal agency operations, personnel matters, procurement processes, or any sensitive, pre-decisional or deliberative material that is not currently publicly available and should not be disclosed under applicable law,” OPM said in a notice for publication in the May 27 Federal Register. If this app has the same technology as Elon Musk’s app that he requires for his employees, beware. I met an engineer who worked at Tesla on a flight home a couple of years back. When I asked her about her job, she shut off her phone before saying anything. She then explained that her phone had an app on it that monitored her conversations as long as her phone was on. Tesla employees were also required to sign an NDA.
