Halloween is a time to have fun, dress up, and express yourself, but no costume is an invitation for unwanted attention or contact. Consent matters every day, no matter what someone is wearing.

Let's keep Halloween fun, safe, and respectful for everyone!

October is the time for horror movies, ghost stories, and haunted houses! Fear can be fun but the people we do spooky fall activities with should never be the ones making us feel afraid.

We should feel safe and loved with the people around us whether we’re at a costume party, in a spooky corn maze, or on the couch watching a scary show.

If someone has made you feel afraid, you are not alone. Start a conversation with someone you trust or reach out to us at: 505-326-4700 or 1-866-908-4700

or reach out to us at the NM Sexual Assault Helpline. Call, text, or chat online at: 1-844-667-2457 | 1-844-NMSAHLP | www.nmsahelp.org

Image Description: Dark blue and white text reads “Fear belongs in haunted houses not relationships” over a dark photo of two jack-o-lanters and candles. The website ItStartsWithUsNM.org and the hashtag appear in a dark banner at the top of the graphic.

Being a good friend isn't about agreeing on everything or always saying the right thing.

It's about showing up for each other when things are messy.

Sometimes that can look like being there for a friend who is going through something difficult. Sometimes it looks like being respectful of each other even when we are upset or annoyed. Sometimes it looks like apologizing for something we did that hurt our friend.

It takes practice and trust, but our friendships are stronger when we show up for each other even when it is hard!

Image Description: Bold text reads “You don’t have to be perfect to be a good friend, just be there" over a photo of two teenage girls sitting on a grass field and talking. ItStartsWithUsNM.org and the hashtag appear in a dark banner at the bottom of the graphic.

Prevention is in session!

Our prevention team is dedicated to educating the younger generation about healthy body boundaries, consent, and safe relationships. Through age-appropriate programs and interactive lessons, we help children understand personal space, recognize unsafe situations, and feel confident speaking up when something doesn't feel right.

Prevention starts with education, and together, we can help create a safer future for our children and our community!

Intimate partner violence can happen in any relationship, and its impact can last a lifetime.

Nearly 1 in 10 women in the United States have experienced r**e by an intimate partner. This statistic reminds us why awareness, education, and prevention are so important. Everyone deserves a relationship built on safety, respect, and consent.

If you or someone you know is experiencing abuse, support is available. You are not alone.
