PUBLIC HEALTH ADVISORY: FLOODWATER CONTAMINATION & VACCINATION REMINDER

Residents are urged to take precautions when coming into contact with floodwater and areas affected by recent flooding throughout San Juan County.

Floodwater (and mud) is contaminated with sewage and may also contain harmful chemicals, bacteria, and other hazardous materials picked up as water moves through structures and streets.

Even if the water appears clean, it may still pose serious health risks.

Protect yourself and your family by following these safety precautions:

AVOID CONTACT WITH FLOODWATER
Do not walk, swim, or allow children or pets to play in floodwater. Keep pets away from contaminated areas.

WEAR PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT DURING CLEANUP
Use waterproof boots, waterproof gloves, eye protection, and other appropriate protective clothing. Avoid entering areas with suspected chemical contamination until they have been assessed.

PRACTICE GOOD HYGIENE
Wash your hands and any exposed skin thoroughly with soap and clean water after contact with floodwater or contaminated materials. Use clean, uncontaminated water for washing.

PROTECT OPEN WOUNDS
Keep cuts and scrapes covered with waterproof bandages. If a wound comes into contact with floodwater, wash it thoroughly with soap and clean water and seek medical guidance.

If you sustain a deep, dirty, or puncture wound during flood cleanup, seek prompt medical attention. Do not wait for a routine vaccination appointment.

WATCH FOR SIGNS OF ILLNESS OR INFECTION
Seek medical attention if you experience fever, vomiting, diarrhea, increasing redness or swelling around a wound, or other concerning symptoms following floodwater exposure.

CHECK YOUR VACCINATION STATUS
Make sure your vaccinations are current, particularly your tetanus vaccination.

Don’t know your vaccination status? You can request your vaccination record at https://vaxview.doh.nm.gov/

WHERE TO GET VACCINATED
Residents who need to update their vaccinations have several options:

Primary care provider: If you have a primary care provider, contact their office to review your vaccination history and schedule any needed vaccinations.

New Mexico Department of Health: Uninsured residents can contact the San Juan County Public Health Office at 505-327-4461, located at 355 S. Miller Ave. in Farmington, to inquire about available vaccinations and schedule an appointment.

Presbyterian Medical Services (PMS): Call (505) 327-4796 to inquire about vaccination availability, fees, and appointments.

Please remember: Tetanus vaccination does not protect against other illnesses associated with contaminated floodwater, including infections caused by sewage or exposure to hazardous chemicals.

Avoiding contact with floodwater and practicing proper hygiene remain essential.

Residents are encouraged to share this information with neighbors, friends, and family members who may be affected by flooding.
