Today, 2nd Harvest Foundation partnered with the San Juan College Harvest Food Hub to transform surplus “misfit” nectarines into delicious homemade nectarine jam! 🍑🍯

By giving perfectly good produce a second chance, we’re helping reduce food waste while creating something fresh, flavorful, and locally made. Every jar represents our commitment to sustainability, education, and strengthening our local food system.

It almost turned out too good to share! 😄 Thank you to everyone who continues to support our mission of reducing food waste, combating food insecurity, and creating hands-on learning opportunities for our community.

🌵 Growing Knowledge Through Nature! 🌵

This week, youth at the Aztec Boys & Girls Club and Farmington Boys & Girls Club explored the fascinating world of succulent plants through a hands-on planting activity.

Participants learned about the importance of native plants, discovered the unique characteristics of different succulent varieties, and gained a greater appreciation for how these resilient plants thrive in our local environment. Through this experience, they also learned about water conservation, plant adaptation, and environmental stewardship.

As a special reward, every participant who joined today’s activity was able to take their newly planted succulent home, giving them the opportunity to continue caring for their plant while applying the skills they learned in class.

At 2nd Harvest Foundation, we believe that every hands-on experience helps cultivate responsibility, confidence, and a lifelong appreciation for nature. 🌱💚

🎉 Tuesday Graduation Celebration – JCC Culinary Life Skills 👩‍🍳👨‍🍳

This Tuesday, July 28,2026, we proudly celebrated the graduation of our JCC Culinary Life Skills participants!

Throughout the program, students gained hands-on experience in meal preparation while developing essential skills in kitchen safety, food sanitation, proper food handling, teamwork, and professionalism. Their dedication and commitment have prepared them with valuable life skills that will benefit them in everyday life and future career opportunities.

🍰 JCC Culinary Life Skills
Students developed their baking skills by preparing homemade coffee cake and carrot cake from scratch. Throughout the lesson, participants practiced measuring ingredients, mixing techniques, baking safety, and proper food preparation while building confidence in the kitchen. The class emphasized teamwork, attention to detail, and the science behind successful baking.

At 2nd Harvest Foundation, every activity helps build life skills, strengthen community connections, and inspire the next generation through agriculture, culinary education, and creative learning.

🌿✨ Another week of creativity, learning, and hands-on experiences with 2nd Harvest Foundation! ✨🌿

🏡 Aztec Boys & Girls Club
Our youth built and painted beautiful birdhouses to replace those that were damaged during last week’s storm. These birdhouses will help welcome birds back into our community garden while teaching participants the importance of wildlife conservation and creating healthy garden habitats.

🌸 Farmington Boys & Girls Club
Participants explored the beauty of flowers through art by painting wooden flowers while learning to identify different flower varieties, their unique characteristics, and the important role they play in supporting pollinators and healthy ecosystems.

🌿🐦 Building Homes for Our Feathered Friends! 🐦🌿

This week at the Aztec Boys & Girls Club and Farmington Boys & Girls Club, our youth combined creativity, teamwork, and environmental stewardship by building and decorating their own birdhouses.

Through this hands-on activity, participants learned how birds play an important role in maintaining healthy gardens by helping with pollination, seed dispersal, and natural insect control. By creating safe homes for local birds, our students are helping establish a welcoming habitat that strengthens the connection between nature, wildlife, and our community gardens.

Every project is an opportunity to build life skills, encourage creativity, and inspire the next generation to care for the environment.

🌿 Farmington Boys & Girls Club – Creativity Meets Nature! 🌿🌸

Today, our youth combined creativity with hands-on learning by painting beautiful wooden flowers while exploring plant identification. Participants learned how to recognize different flowers and plants, discussed their unique characteristics, and discovered why plants are important to our gardens, pollinators, and local ecosystems.

As each child added their own colorful touch to a wooden flower, they also built knowledge about the natural world around them. Activities like these encourage creativity, observation, and a lifelong appreciation for gardening and environmental stewardship.

🌱🎭 Garden Charades at the Aztec Boys & Girls Club! 🎭🌱

Learning about gardening has never been so much fun! Today, our youth put their creativity and teamwork to the test with an exciting game of Garden Charades. Participants acted out different vegetables, flowers, insects, garden tools, and gardening activities while their teammates guessed each one.

This hands-on activity encouraged communication, critical thinking, confidence, and a deeper understanding of the garden in an engaging and interactive way. Laughter filled the room as students learned that education can be both fun and memorable!
