At the beginning of this month a group from the Newman Center and the Knights of Columbus went on a pilgrimage to Servant of God, Michelle Duppong’s families farm in Glen Ullin, ND. While they were there, Michelle’s parents, Ken and Mary Ann, hosted the group, gave a tour of the farmstead, and shared about the life of their daughter. Michelle’s cause opened for sainthood/canonization in 2022 in the Diocese of Bismarck! To learn more about Servant of God, Michelle Duppong please visit: michelleduppongcause.org

Christ lag in Todesbanden sung by the Newman Choir

Christ lag in Todesbanden is a Lutheran chorale based on the Sequence chant of Easter Sunday Victimae paschali laudes. Martin Luther adapted this chant into German in 1524 and Johann Sebastian Bach harmonized it in his Cantata BWV 4. In English, it is commonly sung to the English adaptation “Christ Jesus lay in death’s strong bands.”

Kyrie I “Lux et origo” Newman Choir

The Roman Gradual is the official book of liturgical music for the Latin Rite of the Catholic Church. The first publication of this dates back to 1908 and the latest edition is from 1974, which incorporated the liturgical reforms of the Second Vatican Council. The Gradual contains 18 settings of the Ordinary of the Mass: the Lord, have mercy; Glory to God; Holy, holy, holy; and Lamb of God. Each Mass setting is designated for different liturgical seasons and feast days. Mass I is traditionally sung during Eastertide. The earliest manuscripts of this Kyrie date from the tenth century, though scholars believe that the chant is actually older than that. Originally, it included a trope, an extra section of text, called “Lux et origo” (O Light and very source of light).

It’s finals week at NDSU which means we have fully switched over to our summer Mass times here at the Newman center!
**The biggest change is that there will not be a 5pm Sunday Mass during the summer so be sure to plan accordingly if this is your normal Mass time to go to.
