If you experienced flooding at your home, follow these safety tips:

- The water can contaminate drinking water and contain sewage, sharp items, and chemicals that can make you ill. Check with your local public health department to protect yourself.

- If in doubt, throw out food that got wet or warm.

- Throw away any wet materials that can't be repaired or dried.

- Avoid using gas, propane, natural gas or chemical-burning devices inside a home, garage, basement, tent or camper. It can cause carbon monoxide poisoning.

- If you were unable to return home within 24/48 hours, assume you have mold growth.

- Wear protective clothing, including long pants, boots, work gloves and an N95 respirator to protect your lungs.

Finally, take care of yourself. It's normal to have a lot of bad feelings, stress, or anxiety after a flood. Eat healthy food and get enough sleep to help you deal with stress. You can contact the Red Cross Disaster Distress Helpline for free if you need to talk to someone. Call or text 1-800-985-5990.

On Women’s Equality Day, we’re remembering a lesser-known part of Clara Barton’s remarkable story.
The founder of the American Red Cross did not live to see the 19th Amendment certified on Aug. 26, 1920. But decades earlier, in an 1888 speech supporting women’s suffrage, Barton described her belief simply: “Perfectly equal rights - human rights.”

Throughout her life, Barton pushed beyond expectations for women of her time. She taught, worked for the federal government, brought aid to wounded soldiers during the Civil War and, at age 59, founded the American Red Cross.

Her determination to serve, lead and open doors remains part of the legacy we carry forward today. Learn more about Clara Barton: https://rdcrss.org/4xYc8oA
