Les Peters, born and raised on the Umatilla and Yakama Reservations in the Pacific Northwest, is a nationally recognized leader in youth development with more than 25 years of experience supporting underserved youth through culturally responsive programs that blend digital media arts, outdoor education, and youth leadership. As Executive Director of the YMCA of Greater Long Beach’s Community Development Branch, he brings Native American and Indigenous worldviews into his work to foster greater cultural understanding and a welcoming community for all. A member of the Yakama Nation, Les is a drum keeper, pow wow singer, northern traditional dancer, and Eagle Staff keeper. His work will continue to inspire generations to come.

Abbey and Marie met at Y rookie soccer in 2007, back when their 3-year-olds were running wild across the field. Over the years, they shared a moms group, plenty of workouts at the Y, and the everyday moments in between, and even a move across state lines couldn’t change what they built. Almost 20 years later, they’re still showing up for each other.

When Denise moved to Everett three years ago, she was sad to leave her home of 32 years, but she quickly built a new community when she joined the Y and attended Forever Fitness classes. Through the Y, she found some of her best friends, including Betty, whom she has traveled with to Greece and New York City.

The welcoming atmosphere and senior programs have helped Denise and her husband embrace their new home.

“The Y has enriched my life in Everett in countless ways, from keeping me fit to connecting with others," Denise reflects.
