It’s time!

We're excited to introduce the first wave of our 2026-27 Innovation Grant projects, beginning with our Elevating Music Education impact area!

Music gives students more than a chance to learn an instrument or perform. It gives them space to explore their creativity, build confidence, and discover what they can do.

Investing in music education means giving more students the space, resources, and opportunities to discover their talents and recognize their potential

Together, these three projects create unique ways for students to hone their craft, explore endless opportunities, and build community with fellow musicians.

Nos da mucho gusto presentar la primera tanda de proyectos de nuestras Becas de Innovación 2026-27, ¡comenzando por nuestra área de impacto «Elevating Music Education»!

The sneakers. The celebration. The PURPOSE. 👟✨

Last year, Durham showed up in a BIG way for our inaugural Sole Purpose Sneaker Ball, raising more than $120,000 to support mental health and wellness in Durham Public Schools.

And on November 21, we're doing it again!

Join us for an unforgettable evening of dinner, dancing, community, and giving back, all in support of the Zachari Hawkins Memorial Fund, which invests in mental health and wellness initiatives for DPS students and educators.

We've got a bigger space, a bigger goal, and even more reasons to celebrate what we can accomplish together.

Mental health awareness belongs inside and outside classrooms, no exceptions.

On , we reflect on the WHOLE Schools Movement, a collaboration with BUILD Initiative, Durham Public Schools, Duke University, and the Durham County Health Department.

Over the last three years, this initiative brought together funding, research, and programs to equip students, educators, and families with tools and resources to better understand and respond to youth mental health needs.

While the WHOLE Schools Movement has concluded, the commitment to student well-being continues. Through Strengthening Wellbeing, a dedicated impact area of DPSF's Innovation Grants, we continue investing in ideas that create supportive learning environments and strengthen systems of care for students.

Students carry their emotions, challenges, and experiences with them every day. With the right support from trusted adults, they can grow, heal, and excel in school and life.

La concientización sobre la salud mental debe estar presente tanto dentro como fuera de las aulas, sin excepciones.

En el , reflexionamos sobre el Movimiento “WHOLE Schools”, una colaboración entre la Iniciativa BUILD, las Escuelas Públicas de Durham, la Universidad de Duke y el Departamento de Salud del Condado de Durham.

Durante los últimos tres años, esta iniciativa reunió financiamiento, investigación y programas para equipar a los estudiantes, educadores y familias con herramientas y recursos que les permitan comprender mejor y responder a las necesidades de salud mental de los jóvenes.

Students are naturally curious, and together, we can give them more places to take that curiosity and wonder.

Last Sunday, our partners at Museum of Life and Science took DPS students on a geological exploration, where they searched for, discovered, and identified different types of minerals.

Experiences like these give students a chance to connect what they’re learning to the world around them. And when trusted adults and community partners create opportunities for students to explore their questions firsthand, curiosity can become discovery.

That’s part of what it means to put students at the heart of family engagement: creating more opportunities for them to explore, discover, and imagine what’s possible beyond the classroom.

Los alumnos son curiosos por naturaleza, y juntos podemos ofrecerles más lugares donde llevar esa curiosidad y ese asombro.

El domingo pasado, nuestros socios del Museo de la Vida y la Ciencia llevaron a los estudiantes de DPS a una exploración geológica, en la que buscaron, descubrieron e identificaron diferentes tipos de minerales.

Experiencias como estas les dan a los alumnos la oportunidad de conectar lo que están aprendiendo con el mundo que los rodea. Y cuando adultos de confianza y socios de la comunidad crean oportunidades para que los alumnos exploren sus preguntas de primera mano, la curiosidad puede convertirse en descubrimiento.

Eso es parte de lo que significa poner a los alumnos en el centro de la participación familiar: crear más oportunidades para que exploren, descubran e imaginen lo que es posible más allá del salón de clases.

Celebrating teachers today, tomorrow, and always.

There is no education without educators, and no thriving school community without teachers.

When we support educators, we invest in the mentors who make learning and growth a possibility for students. Their impact extends beyond the classroom: in the curiosity they nurture and the strength and confidence they build in their students.

To every current and former educator across DPS schools: thank you for all you have given—and continue to give—to our students and community.

What happens when students and parents learn in the same place and time?

At the , Homework con Amigos offers a space where students and parents get support together. Students work with undergraduate volunteers on homework and talk about careers and opportunities, and parents gather to learn and make informed decisions for their students.

Families don't always have the time or a trusted space for these conversations. Between school, work, and other responsibilities, questions go unanswered, and opportunities for connection can be hard to find.

But with volunteers and partners like and , we can create more evenings and spaces where parents get the answers they need, students connect with role models, and more families build knowledge and fellowship.

This week, those evenings have moved one step closer: the volunteers have completed their training! We’re looking forward to welcoming families to another season of learning at the library.

¿Qué sucede cuando los estudiantes y los padres aprenden en el mismo lugar y al mismo tiempo?

En la , el programa «Homework con Amigos» ofrece un espacio donde los estudiantes y los padres reciben apoyo juntos. Los estudiantes trabajan con voluntarios universitarios en sus tareas y hablan sobre carreras y oportunidades; mientras tanto, los padres se reúnen para aprender y tomar decisiones informadas sobre sus hijos.

99 applications. 51 DPS schools represented. $759,241 in ideas seeking investment.

These numbers tell a story from within. Behind every application is an idea with the potential to create change, and behind every idea is a team of educators, students, and community members ready to put it into action. With applications representing 51 of 57 DPS schools, that spirit of possibility reaches across nearly the entire district.

The Innovation Grant Cohort helps grantees develop and implement their projects from start to finish, while learning and collaborating with other passionate leaders. Investing in school-based solutions creates opportunities for scalable solutions across DPS schools and continues to make long-lasting impacts.

From ideas to action, we can’t wait to introduce you to this year’s grantees and share the work they’re doing across DPS. Stay tuned for the announcement of the incoming cohort!

Welcome, new DPS teachers!

Before the school year began, more than 100 educators received free classroom supplies during New Teacher Orientation, along with support and warmth. With 12 educators coming from abroad, these teachers are the newest Bull City members!

Every year, supply costs add up, and under-equipped classrooms affect students and teachers alike. Supporting teachers in their classrooms means supporting the students who come to class, do the work, and learn.

With financial donations and support from public school champions, C2C has provided teachers with free school supplies up to four times a school year. The New Teacher Orientation was an opportunity to introduce ourselves to these outstanding educators and continue making progress toward our goal of ensuring every student has a chance to succeed.

¡Bienvenidos, nuevos maestros de DPS!

Antes de que comenzara el año escolar, más de 100 educadores recibieron material escolar gratuito, apoyo y una cálida bienvenida durante la Orientación para Nuevos Maestros. Con la incorporación de doce educadores internacionales, ¡estos maestros son los miembros más recientes de Bull City!

How do you support students’ wellness inside the classroom? 🪷

Brave & Safe provided a physical area for fifth graders to self-regulate and develop emotional wellness practices right inside their classrooms. A 2025-26 Innovation Grant proposed by Lyon Farms Elementary educators, these spaces allowed students a moment to heal and recharge with tools to eventually rejoin class. ✏️

These quotes from “Brave Space” students show that allowing students a temporary moment of relief to nurture their emotional well-being can make a lasting impact in and out of the classroom. ✨

¿Cómo puede apoyar el bienestar de los alumnos dentro de sus aulas? 🪷

El programa «Brave & Safe» estableció un espacio físico para que los alumnos de quinto grado se autorregulen y desarrollaren prácticas de bienestar emocional directamente dentro de sus aulas. Estos espacios, que formaban parte de una subvención de innovación para el ciclo escolar 2025-26 propuesta por los educadores de la escuela primaria Lyon Farms, permitieron a los alumnos tener un momento para recuperarse y recargar energías con herramientas que les permitiera incorporarse a la clase. ✏️
