🚍✨ For 25 years, Fill That Bus! has brought Durham together to support DPS teachers and students.

Started by the Durham Regional Association of REALTORS and now led by DPSF program Crayons2Calculators, Fill That Bus! has grown into a long-standing community tradition helping annually equip thousands of DPS classrooms with the supplies students need to learn and thrive. 🖍️📚

A new VoyageRaleigh feature highlights the story and impact behind Fill That Bus! while also reflecting on the 20-year history of C2C and the community partnerships that helped grow this work over the years.

We hope you’ll celebrate this milestone year with us when Fill That Bus! returns July 13–August 14. 🚍✨

🚍✨ Durante 25 años, «¡Llena ese autobús! («Fill That Bus!») ha unido a la comunidad de Durham para apoyar a los maestros y alumnos del Distrito Escolar de Durham (DPS).

Iniciada por la Asociación Regional de Agentes Inmobiliarios de Durham y dirigida actualmente por el programa «Crayons2Calculators» de la Fundación de DPS, «Fill That Bus» se ha convertido en una tradición comunitaria que ayuda cada año a equipar miles de aulas de DPS con el material que los alumnos necesitan para aprender y prosperar. 🖍️📚

Last week’s Impact Garden grantee celebration at the Durham Armory brought together educators, students, caregivers, and community partners to reflect on a year of meaningful work happening throughout our schools.

For 25 years, Fill That Bus! has brought the Durham community together to invest in its public schools — helping ensure DPS teachers and students have the supplies they need to start the school year ready to learn, create, and thrive. 💙

This spring, while students received homework support through Homework Con Amigos, DPS families also had the opportunity to build digital literacy skills through a workshop series facilitated by The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Department of Library Science. 💙

Through hands-on training like setting up email accounts, accessing digital communication tools, and navigating online resources, families are now better positioned to stay informed, communicate with schools and teachers, and support their students throughout the school year.

Programs like these are most impactful when families feel welcomed and supported. By building trust, offering translation services, and creating spaces where families can learn together, we help remove barriers and strengthen connections between home and school.

We’re grateful to UNC’s Department of Library Science for partnering in this work and helping expand digital access and family engagement across Durham Public Schools. ✨

National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day is a reminder that when we invest in student wellbeing, we change what’s possible in our schools. 💚

Across Durham Public Schools, students are feeling more connected, supported, and ready to learn because this community continues to show up for them. When mental health is prioritized, schools become places where young people can truly thrive.

Since 2022, we’ve helped incubate WHOLE Schools, laying the foundation for stronger mental health support in our schools. Today, that commitment continues through the Zachari Hawkins Memorial Fund and the Sole Purpose Sneaker Ball, powered by a community that believes every child deserves to feel seen, safe, and supported 🌟

El Día nacional de concienciación sobre la salud mental de los niños nos recuerda que, cuando invertimos en el bienestar de los alumnos, cambiamos lo que es posible en nuestras escuelas. 💚

En todas las Escuelas Públicas de Durham, los alumnos se sienten más conectados, apoyados y preparados para aprender porque esta comunidad sigue estando ahí para ellos. Cuando se da prioridad a la salud mental, las escuelas se convierten en lugares donde los jóvenes pueden prosperar de verdad.

This , we’re celebrating educators like Mrs. Del Verne of Lyons Farm Elementary who create classrooms where students feel safe, seen, and ready to thrive.

Through her Brave & Safe WHOLE Schools Fund grant project, she’s supporting fifth graders, many of whom started as “COVID Kindergartners,” with calming corners, inclusive materials, SEL tools, and restorative circles that support both learning and mental health and wellness 🌿

Because of teachers like her, classrooms become communities where students can truly belong—and grow. 🌱
