Earth Day impact #13! Volunteers from Bailey & Dixon spent Earth Day helping Umstead Coalition restore Sycamore Mess Hall at Umstead State Park, a building that has been closed to the public for nearly 40 years. The Umstead Coalition stepped in to save the structure from demolition and is working to transform it into a Day Use facility that all North Carolinians can enjoy.

The Bailey & Dixon team got to work sanding and polyurethaning the historic mess hall tables and benches, as well as the benches overlooking the beautiful Sycamore Lake.

Crescent Communities partnered with EarthShare NC member nonprofit Carolina Raptor Center for one of the most construction-intensive projects of the day, and they were absolutely up for it.

Ten volunteers spent the day building a foster enclosure for young raptors and clearing invasive plants, taking on everything from drilling and lumber cutting to material transport with enthusiasm that caught everyone off guard in the best possible way. As one staff member put it: 'This team blew us away with their excitement and willingness to help with whatever was needed.'

The teamwork was just as impressive as the output. Volunteers constantly looked out for one another, jumping in wherever help was needed and making sure everyone felt the weight of their contribution.

The Carolina Raptor Center does vital work rehabilitating birds of prey and returning them to the wild. EarthShare NC connects them with partners willing to roll up their sleeves and build something that lasts.

Earth Day impact #12! Brooks Pierce partnered with Piedmont Land Conservancy for a day of hands-on land restoration, taking on one of conservation's most persistent challenges: invasive species.

Twenty volunteers tackled the work head-on and cleared an impressive 5,000 square feet of invasive plants from conserved land. Invasive species removal is painstaking, unglamorous work, and Brooks Pierce took it in stride.

Piedmont Land Conservancy works to preserve the natural and agricultural lands of the NC Piedmont for future generations. EarthShare NC connects them with partners willing to put in the work that conservation actually requires.

We’re back with more reporting from our 12th Annual Earth Day Events! Greenology partnered with EarthShare NC member nonprofit Friends of State Parks for a full day of trail maintenance, construction, and cleanup.

Eighteen volunteers hit the ground running; repaired 40 feet of trail, cleaned a full mile of trail, and hauled out 10 pounds of trash. They jumped straight into the work without hesitation and kept pace all day long.

Greenology is a company that knows exactly why they make the products they make, and that sense of purpose translated directly into the way they showed up for this project.

Friends of State Parks supports the protection and improvement of NC's state parks, and EarthShare NC connects them with partners who genuinely share that commitment.

SAS Software partnered with Duke Lemur Center for a day of hands-on garden care at one of the most extraordinary conservation facilities in the world. Eleven volunteers weeded, maintained, and mulched 500 square feet of garden space, giving the grounds the attention they deserved.

The Duke Lemur Center is home to the world's largest population of lemurs outside of Madagascar, protecting endangered species through research, conservation, and education. Staff summed up the volunteers’ time there: 'They were all so excited about the lemurs, the gardens, and just to be here and helping!'

That kind of genuine enthusiasm is exactly what EarthShare NC’s Earth Day Events is all about.

Leyline showed up at the Piedmont Wildlife Center ready to work on an Earth Day Events, project that was anything but ordinary. The mission: a thorough cleaning and series of upgrades to a barred owl enclosure. Volunteers removed 3 pounds of accumulated feathers, pellets, bones, and other remnants left behind by the enclosure's wild resident.

When it came time to tackle the messier side of wildlife care (and it did get messy), nobody flinched. The team embraced the challenge, kept the mood light, and found ways to have fun with it. Beyond the elbow grease, plenty of volunteers discovered skills they didn't know they had, which made the day that much more rewarding.

Piedmont Wildlife Center is a member of Environmental Educators of North Carolina, providing professional development, and promoting excellence for North Carolina's community of environmental educators. Leyline left with a whole new appreciation for what wildlife care actually looks like up close.

We shared our anticipation for the 12th Annual Earth Day Events, and now we’ll share the outcomes! EarthShare NC member nonprofit Carolina Tiger Rescue is a favorite for volunteers, and this year was no exception. First-time volunteers from Greenplaces cleared and beautified the 400 sq feet Memorial Garden at the wildlife sanctuary where the lives of beautiful big cats are honored beyond their years. Carolina Tiger Rescue saves and protects wild cats who have been exploited by humans, while also promoting conservation, education, and advocacy to protect wild cats in their wild native habitats.

Volunteers were treated to a tour of the sanctuary and learned stories of wild residents past and present. Environmental impact, team building, conservation education, and a few big cats watching from nearby? This Earth Day project was a little wild!
