Rotary Foundation works toward several key health goals including eradicating polio. To recognize vital donors to this effort, we frequently honor Rotarians who have achieved a cumulative benchmark of $1,000 as Paul Harris Fellows, often multiple times. At the most recent meeting Bob Stevens (left to right), Kim Shaw, and Barry Curtis were recognized by club Foundation Chair John Taylor.

Constantly setting an example for service about self, Newman Aguiar (right) has led so many service projects and served in a number of leadership posts. District Governor Pat Gallagher and Assistant Governor Sara Abrons presented Newman with the
2026 Rotary International Distinguished Service Award! Rotary caps this award to no more than 50 individuals a year. The award honors Rotarians who demonstrate exceptional, long-term service to the Foundation far beyond the local district level. Congratulations Newman! You inspire us all!

Congratulations to the recipients of the Rotary Club of Durham's 2026 student scholarship awards! One of our club's signature youth initiatives awards scholarships in two categories to students who demonstrate leadership potential, academic excellence, and a strong commitment for service. The "Starting Line" scholarships provide financial assistance to graduating seniors entering college or community college, and the "Finish Line Scholarship" assists students who are already enrolled in post-secondary school.

The scholarship students are selected through long-standing Rotary partnerships with the Emily Krzyzewski Center and Student U, both of which stay in touch with the students throughout their academic careers. Many thanks to Megan Stanley, Associate Director of College Readiness & Success at Student U, and Tommy Yandle, Director of College Success at The Emily K Center, for your commitment to this program and to the students we support together!

The following students were awarded this year's scholarships by Scholarship Committee member, Susan Cranford Ross and Committee Chair, Kimberly Glenn, at the Rotary Club of Durham's annual scholarship meeting on July 27:

Ashanti Bellamy, Sebastian Carrazco Badillo, Saeed Lobbad, Elliot Bocanegra, Jazzmin Myrie, Keema Gonzalez-Rodriguez, Anna Julie Duran Munoz, Eleyse Parker, Chris Linares-Palencia, Angelina Portillo, Melvin Romero, and Donna Mejia Benavides.

Rotary Club of Durham members and their families who sponsored this year's scholarship students include the Cranford Family Scholarship, Guy and Mindy Solie Scholarship, the Horton Family Finish Line Scholarship, Jose and Meg Solera Family Scholarship, the Gresham Family Scholarship, John and Cindy Aldrich Scholarship, and the Brantley DeLoatche Memorial Scholarship.

We're so proud of all the Rotarians who step up with philanthropy to become a Paul Harris Fellow. Steve Hanock (left to right) earned his first Paul Harris pin at Monday's meeting. President Kim Shaw congratulated him along with Clay Brown, who earned his 8th pin, and John Taylor, who earned his third!
