Compañeros appreciates Durango City Council's willingness to further examine the Immigration Task Force recommendations. We see this as an opportunity to continue the conversation and strengthen the work that has already begun.
We also want to reaffirm the concerns we shared during public comment.
First, we are grateful to the community members who volunteered their time to serve on the task force. Immigration is an incredibly complex issue, and we appreciate their willingness to engage in these difficult conversations.
At the same time, we believe the recommendations presented should be viewed as a starting point rather than the solutions our community ultimately needs.
Many of the recommendations focus on education, resource navigation, legal services, and community support that organizations in our region are already providing. We believe the City can have a greater impact by strengthening and partnering with those existing organizations while continuing to explore what Durango can uniquely do as a municipal government.
That is why we hope City Council will use this moment to revisit both the goals and the makeup of the task force.
If one of the important lessons from this process is that the City should work more closely with organizations already serving immigrant families, we also believe those organizations should have a meaningful role in developing the next phase of this work.
Compañeros would have welcomed that opportunity. Our immigration legal services team was prepared to bring a legal perspective to the conversation, helping the task force understand existing protections, identify potential gaps, and explore what options may be available to local government. Unfortunately, our team was not invited to participate directly in the task force.
We share this not to assign blame, but because we believe it identifies an opportunity to strengthen the process moving forward.
Immigration policy and enforcement are changing rapidly. Having immigration legal professionals, immigrant-serving organizations, directly impacted community members, policy experts, and other partners working together could help the City develop recommendations that are both meaningful and legally informed.
Ultimately, we share the same goal: ensuring that Durango is a community where immigrant families feel safe, supported, and valued.
We hope the next phase of this work focuses on identifying concrete solutions, clearly defining what role the City can uniquely play, strengthening the organizations already serving our community, and ensuring that the people closest to these issues have a meaningful seat at the table.
The recommendations presented do not need to be the end of this process. They can be an opportunity to revisit the task force, broaden the expertise represented, clarify its goals, and continue working toward stronger solutions.
Compañeros and other organizations remain ready and willing to be partners in that work.

Compañeros agradece la disposición del Concejo Municipal de Durango para seguir examinando las recomendaciones del Grupo de Trabajo sobre Inmigración. Vemos esto como una oportunidad para continuar la conversación y fortalecer el trabajo que ya se ha iniciado.
También queremos reafirmar las preocupaciones que compartimos durante el comentario público.
Primero, agradecemos a las personas de nuestra comunidad que ofrecieron voluntariamente su tiempo para formar parte del grupo de trabajo. La inmigración es un tema sumamente complejo y valoramos su disposición para participar en estas conversaciones difíciles.
Al mismo tiempo, creemos que las recomendaciones presentadas deben considerarse como un punto de partida, y no como las soluciones que nuestra comunidad realmente necesita.
Muchas de las recomendaciones se enfocan en educación, navegación de recursos, servicios legales y apoyo comunitario que organizaciones de nuestra región ya están proporcionando. Creemos que la Ciudad puede tener un mayor impacto fortaleciendo y colaborando con estas organizaciones existentes, mientras continúa explorando qué puede hacer Durango de manera única como gobierno municipal.
Por eso esperamos que el Concejo Municipal aproveche este momento para revisar tanto los objetivos como la composición del grupo de trabajo.
Si una de las lecciones importantes de este proceso es que la Ciudad debe trabajar más estrechamente con las organizaciones que ya sirven a las familias inmigrantes, también creemos que esas organizaciones deben tener un papel significativo en el desarrollo de la próxima etapa de este trabajo.
Compañeros hubiera recibido con gusto esa oportunidad. Nuestro equipo de servicios legales de inmigración estaba preparado para aportar una perspectiva legal a la conversación, ayudando al grupo de trabajo a comprender las protecciones existentes, identificar posibles vacíos y explorar qué opciones podrían estar disponibles para el gobierno local. Desafortunadamente, nuestro equipo no fue invitado a participar directamente en el grupo de trabajo.
Compartimos esto no para señalar culpables, sino porque creemos que representa una oportunidad para fortalecer el proceso de aquí en adelante.
Las políticas y las prácticas de aplicación de las leyes migratorias están cambiando rápidamente. Contar con profesionales legales de inmigración, organizaciones que sirven a comunidades inmigrantes, personas directamente afectadas, expertos en políticas públicas y otros aliados trabajando juntos podría ayudar a la Ciudad a desarrollar recomendaciones que sean significativas y que cuenten con una sólida perspectiva legal.
Al final, compartimos el mismo objetivo: asegurar que Durango sea una comunidad donde las familias inmigrantes se sientan seguras, apoyadas y valoradas.
Esperamos que la próxima etapa de este trabajo se enfoque en identificar soluciones concretas, definir claramente el papel único que puede desempeñar la Ciudad, fortalecer a las organizaciones que ya sirven a nuestra comunidad y asegurar que las personas más cercanas a estos temas tengan un lugar significativo en la mesa.
Las recomendaciones presentadas no tienen que ser el final de este proceso. Pueden ser una oportunidad para revisar el grupo de trabajo, ampliar la experiencia y las perspectivas representadas, aclarar sus objetivos y continuar trabajando hacia soluciones más sólidas.
