May 31st in DD history -- Memorial Day Light Show
Photo by Charles Howard Smith Photography IG

What a show it was! For Memorial Day the Aerial Lift Bridge lit up Red, White, and Blue as I made my way to the location I chose to try and capture the lightning show. Shortly after I arrived I was greeted by this sight which I was able to capture in a single photograph.

Together these two works span the breadth of human experience, from Beethoven’s bold, searching energy to Perrault’s deeply felt response to displacement and resilience. Tickets are $10 online or at the door.

Did you know Memorial Day wasn't always celebrated on the last Monday of the month of May? For over 100 years, it was celebrated on May 30, regardless of the day of the week.

1868 – 1970: Originally known as Decoration Day, it was celebrated annually on May 30. This date was chosen by General John A. Logan to decorate the graves of Civil War soldiers, as it was a time when flowers were in bloom across the country.

1971 – Present: Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act in 1968, which officially changed the observance to the last Monday in May to guarantee federal employees a three-day weekend. This change officially went into effect in 1971.

Because the last Monday in May shifts from year to year, Memorial Day can fall on any date between May 25 and May 31. This year, Memorial Day was the earliest (May 25). In 2027, it will fall on May 31st.
