The thousand-footer, American Integrity, was soaking up the golden sun during its daybreak arrival this morning. Lake Superior is calm, temperatures are warm, and there are many happy faces throughout Canal Park today. We hope you enjoy this day of abundant daylight!

M/V James R. Barker delighted thousands of runners and spectators in town for the 50th anniversary of Grandma's Marathon.

About the Barker
James R. Barker is named in honor of the President and Chairman of the Board of Interlake Steamship Company. Built for $43 million under the Merchant Marine Act of 1970, the Barker was the first thousand-footer to be entirely built on the Great Lakes and the first thousand-footer to have all accommodations located in a rear superstructure.

Her design served as a model for the next thousand-footers built after her.

"Loon at Daybreak"

After shooting sunrise, I was paddling back when I noticed a loon in one of the shaded bays that still had steam on it. It was a long shot, but there was a chance I could photograph it in some dramatic light. I was careful to keep my distance and eventually the loon warmed up to me, even popping up out of the water a few feet from the canoe. The sun rose over the trees, creating the magical backlight I was seeking, and then the brief moment arrived where the lighting was perfect. The loon decided to put on a show, and that's when I snapped this image.

Ryan Tischer is one of the North Shore's premier landscape photographers and a favorite contributor to Destination Duluth. His stunning images of Lake Superior, the North Shore, and Life Up North are viewed more than a million times each year across Destination Duluth's Facebook and Instagram pages.

Born and raised in Carlton, Minnesota, Ryan developed his love for the outdoors through countless camping and fishing trips across northern Minnesota. In 2017, he opened Tischer Gallery in downtown Duluth and later relocated to Canal Park, where visitors can now experience some of the region's most iconic photography in person.

If you're looking for a meaningful reminder of your time on the North Shore, Tischer Gallery is well worth a stop. Ryan has an extraordinary ability to capture the light, mood, power, and beauty of Lake Superior and the surrounding wilderness. Whether you're a visitor wanting to take a piece of the North Shore home or a local looking to add a little more Lake Superior to your walls, you'll find images that celebrate what makes this place so special.

Take a piece of the North Shore home.
