🌿Seeing Impact Happen!

We invited donors and members of our Biodiversity Committee to join us for our very first Impact Tour—a chance to see firsthand the work their support is making possible. Along the way, we asked questions, learned more about the work, and connected with the organizations making it happen.

It was a gorgeous fall day to be out learning together.

We visited Hartley Nature Center, Chester Bowl Improvement Club, and Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory to see how funding is helping local projects take root and shine. 🌱

For John Henry “Johnny” Eldred, skiing was more than a sport. It was where he spent weekends as a kid, found community and friendship, and eventually built a career.

Now, his love of skiing is helping create those same opportunities for young people in the community where it all began.

Established by Johnny’s family in his memory, the Johnny Eldred Ski Opportunity Fund will support local youth skiing through the Washburn/Bayfield ski program and Mt. Ashwabay. Boreal Waters is honored to steward the fund and help carry Johnny’s love of skiing forward.

The fund grew from family, friends, and community members who wanted to honor Johnny in a way that reflected the role skiing played in his life: by helping the next generation experience it, too.

A big thank you to everyone who joined us for our Professional Advisor Happy Hour last Wednesday🍻

It was wonderful to bring so many folks from the local estate planning community together! We enjoyed the conversations, comradery, and time spent with professionals who play such an important role in helping individuals, families and our community plan for the future.

Help shape local grantmaking this fall. 🍂

We’re looking for community members to serve as reviewers for our Fall 2026 Grant Cycle.

Grant reviewers bring their knowledge, experience, and perspective to the process of reviewing applications and helping guide where grant dollars are invested. We value people who know their communities, understand the issues being addressed, or bring relevant lived or professional experience.
Reviewers will:

đź”· Review approximately 15 applications through our online grant portal between September 28 and October 19 at your convenience
đź”· Serve on one review committee
đź”· Participate in one two-hour Zoom meeting

Committee meeting options:
• October 19 at 9:00 a.m.
• October 21 at 3:00 p.m.
• October 22 at 1:00 p.m.

We’re excited to announce the 2026 Community Opportunity Fund awardees! 🙌🏼

This Fall, Boreal Waters Community Foundation has awarded over $933,000 in 2026 Community Opportunity Fund grants to 23 organizations across northeastern Minnesota, northwestern Wisconsin and the region’s Tribal Nations. Grants range from $23,000 to $50,000 and support work that creates opportunity, promotes resilience, and builds belonging — from expanding access to food and housing, to strengthening workforce development, supporting youth and families, and investing in thriving communities. 🫂

"This funding is especially exciting because it allows us to provide a raise for our incredible staff, who create entirely new menus every week full of delicious and nourishing food. We also created a new position to help alleviate some of the burden from current staff, and we can create a foundation to grow so our whole community can flourish." - Phoebe Burchill, Cafe Manager of 2026 Grant Recipient Stone Soup Cafe
