What if the way we think about aging could help us live longer?

Research shows that older adults with positive perceptions of aging live an average of 7.5 years longer. Yet age-based stereotypes continue to affect how people are treated in workplaces, healthcare settings, and everyday life.

Today, on Ageism Awareness Day, let's challenge outdated assumptions and celebrate the experience, resilience, and contributions of older adults. After all, aging isn't someone else's journey. It's all of ours.

This holiday season, the Detroit Area Agency on Aging (DAAA) is seeking volunteers to help deliver hot meals, warm smiles, and holiday cheer to older adults throughout our community on Christmas Day. Volunteer opportunities include meal delivery and support at host sites across metro Detroit. Volunteers ages 18 and older are welcome to apply.

Every meal delivered is a reminder that someone cares. Join us in ensuring no older adult is forgotten this holiday season and help make Christmas brighter, one visit at a time.

Volunteer applications are due by November 16, 2026.

If you are passionate about connecting people to the resources and support they need, don't miss the 2026 Inform Michigan Training Conference & Annual Meetings on October 22, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in Lansing. This year's theme, "Real Help Happens Here," celebrates the critical role of information and assistance professionals, community navigators, aging network staff, social service providers, and care coordinators who help individuals and families access vital services.

Attendees will benefit from engaging plenary sessions, breakout discussions, networking opportunities, statewide updates, and Inform Michigan's Annual Membership Meeting, including a virtual appearance by Inform USA Executive Director Steve Rippe.

Another great opportunity for our members! On Tuesday, St. Pat’s Joyce Holly facilitated a Medicare Open Enrollment Seminar - which drew a full house in our recently remodeled Tech Hub. Joyce provides counsel and advice on the State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) - Michigan’s FREE, UNBIASED resource to help navigate Medicare.
