Moussa Dia gave his time so others could survive. He didn’t wait to be asked.
He showed up - for pregnant women who needed rides to their appointments, for community members navigating a healthcare system not built for them, for asylum seekers who needed someone to believe things could be okay.
He is known for one thing above all: a huge smile and an instinct to help. In a new country where isolation can be crushing, Moussa was the kind of person who made people feel like they belonged.
In December, Moussa went to his scheduled ICE check-in - fully compliant, as he had always been. He was arrested on the spot and transferred to North Lake Correctional Facility in Baldwin, Michigan, where he remains today without bond.
There was no crime. No threat. No reason beyond an administration determined to detain anyone it can.
Moussa did everything right, and he is still being punished for it.
We are asking the judge to grant Moussa Dia a bond so he can return to his community while he awaits his day in court. He is not a flight risk. He is not a danger.
He is a man who spent his time making life easier for the people around him.
Moussa should not be warehoused in Baldwin. He should be home - driving someone to their appointment, organizing the next match, sharing that smile.

Siwatu-Salama Ra is a mother and a prison abolitionist organizer who was born and raised in Detroit. She was politicized and raised in the Pan African/Black liberation and Environmental Justice Movement as a youth leader and organizer. Siwatu served as co-director of East Michigan Environmental Action Council where she began bridging Detroit’s Organizing community with other impacted communities across the US and internationally. Siwatu’s leadership has been most practiced through building alliances, strengthening the grassroots sector across turtle island and internationally representing the US Black experience in places like Paris France, Istanbul Turkey, Dakar Senegal, Colombia and Egypt.

In March of 2018 Siwatu was incarcerated for defending herself, her mother, and daughter. At the time of her imprisonment, she was in her third trimester of pregnancy and was forced to give birth to her beautiful son in prison. Sentenced to two years in prison Siwatu was released on bond pending appeal from Michigan Women’s Huron Valley Correctional Facility. In August 2019 Siwatu’s unjust conviction was reversed by the court of appeals. In February 2020 she won her total freedom where she publicly committed to advocating for the liberation and dignity of the thousands of women and people inside Michigan’s Women’s prison and all prisons that exist.
