BIG thank you to for featuring our work exploring art as a tool for traffic safety. 🎨

Last September, we collaborated on a mural and traffic calming project that reflects how creative, place-based design can support safer, more livable streets in Detroit.

This work is part of our broader commitment to using art as a strategy for spatial equity and community-centered design.

⚠️ Update: Today’s Stickwork Farewell Gathering has been canceled due to weather.

The Stickwork sculpture by Patrick Dougherty has reached the end of its natural life. Built with the community in 2021, it has been a beloved part of Eliza Howell Park for years. Recent winds brought the structure down, marking a natural and graceful close for a work made entirely of woven branches.

While we won’t be gathering today, we still invite you to help us celebrate and say goodbye.

If you have photos or memories of Stickwork, we’d love for you to share them with us. Your stories will help us document its life and contribute to a book honoring this installation. 💚

🌿 We’re excited to invite you to the opening of Water as Witness by Maya Davis, our 2025–2026 Eco-Artist-in-Residence. This special celebration marks a major milestone, as Water as Witness is the first permanent sculpture installed at Eliza Howell Park.
Rooted in water, memory, and environmental justice, Water as Witness is an off-grid sculpture that collects, filters, and redirects rainwater into the landscape, supporting a future rain garden and deepening our relationship to water and land.

This special gathering is a chance to experience the work together and celebrate what it represents for the park and community.

🌿 Applications for the Trail Keepers 2026 Fellowship have been extended to Saturday, April 18th!

Trail Keepers is a paid youth workforce development program based at Eliza Howell Park focused on land stewardship, conservation, and urban forestry. Participants gain hands-on experience caring for Detroit’s green spaces while building leadership skills and exploring environmental career pathways.

The program includes two tracks:

🌱 Trail Keepers Fellowship (Ages 18–24)
A leadership-focused program where participants earn certifications, work on park improvement projects, and mentor younger youth. This track is competitive, with only four spots available.
Applications now due Saturday, April 18.

🌳 Trail Keepers Collective (Ages 14–18)
A hands-on summer program where participants learn stewardship skills, contribute to park projects, and build workforce readiness.
Applications are still open.

Together, these programs help cultivate the next generation of environmental stewards and advocates for Detroit’s public green spaces.

There’s something powerful about being in the same room, creating space for residents to share their experiences and shape what happens in their neighborhood. 💚

Last month at our final Eliza Howell Park Community Dinner and Master Plan presentation, we connected with Brooke and her daughter Selina, a reflection of the past, present, and future of this community.

Thank you to Brooke and Selina for sharing your story with us!

A big thank you to everyone who joined us Saturday at Eliza Howell Park in the Woods: Photography & The Environment! 🌿📸 It was a beautiful way to welcome the start of spring, slow down together, walk the trails, and appreciate the quiet details of the season.

A special thank you to Edgar Cardenas for guiding us through the experience, sharing your practice and insights, and helping us see the park through a new lense.

If you captured a moment, we’d love to see it! Tag your photos with and share what you noticed. 💚
