Happy Hump Day, fellow professionals.🐪 Here’s Courtney!

***

🎓 Hello! I’m Courtney, and I have a BSc in History and Politics with a focus in Middle Eastern Studies from The Open University in the United Kingdom.

📢 I started my nonprofit journey volunteering with Indivisible Group and Planned Parenthood. It helped me realize there was a career path in mission-driven work for causes that I'm passionate about!

🇩🇪 To date, my favorite moment in the nonprofit sector has been seeing full-circle direct impact moments. During my time working in refugee resettlement in Germany, I witnessed refugees from the 2014 Syrian Civil War who fled to Germany, and I helped support refugees from Ukraine who fled to Germany in 2022.

🔄 As a member of the YNPN board, I'm excited to connect and network with more young nonprofit professionals so we can learn from and support one another.

🫶 There’s a myth about nonprofits that says you must put your head down and accept a culture that overworks, underpays, and undervalues its staff to maximize community impact. Joining an organization like YNPN Detroit, however, shows just how much that’s not the case.

🤗It's important to be in community with other young nonprofit professionals because it's easy to feel isolated in the organizations where we work. Being in a space with people who share your values, have similar goals, and face similar challenges in the sector can be incredibly beneficial.

📧 Being a part of YNPN can help increase access to resources, job boards, social events, and professional development opportunities!

Fellow professionals, we’re on a roll. Meet Chantel!

***

👧🏾 Hi! My name is Chantel Taylor, and I attended Kentucky State University with a major in Psychology and a minor in Child Development.

➡️ Over time, my passion shifted more toward community engagement, youth development, and nonprofit leadership, which led me into the nonprofit space.

🫸🫷My first nonprofit interaction was volunteering for community outreach that supports underserved families. I saw firsthand how intentional programming and genuine care could make a tangible impact!

🎇 That moment sparked something; I realized I want to be part of the work that uplifts, and empowers those who need them.

📓 One of my favorite moments has been organizing and witnessing the growth of our annual back-to-school giveaway through my nonprofit. Seeing the joy on the faces of children receiving backpacks, supplies, and love from their community reminded me of why this work matters!

🌱 Moments like that reaffirm that we’re planting seeds of hope, confidence, and support.

🎩 A common myth about nonprofit work is that it’s less professional or structured than corporate work. In reality, nonprofit leaders wear several hats, often operating with limited resources while still achieving big results.

➕ As a new board member of YNPN Detroit, I’m most excited to collaborate with like-minded professionals who are equally passionate about driving positive change.

📈 I’m looking forward to building relationships, sharing resources, and creating intentional programming that supports the growth and development of young nonprofit leaders.

🌻 If you’d like to join, join! YNPN is more than just a network – it’s a supportive community. Whether you’re new to the nonprofit world or have years of experience, there’s a place for you here to grow, connect, and be inspired.

💎 The opportunities to learn and collaborate are truly invaluable!

Happy New Week, everyone! Our new board member introductions continue. Meet Rebecca!

***

Hello! I’m Rebecca Weil-Hoskins, and I have an English degree from Baldwin Wallace University.

✍️ I grew up in a family of volunteers, so I spent a lot of time in and around the nonprofit space, even as a kid. In college, I took a grant writing class that partnered us with a local nonprofit, and after winning my first ever grant, I was hooked!

🎯 I’ve spent my entire career in the nonprofit space, so it’s impossible to choose just one favorite moment, but the most rewarding part of my job is seeing the impact my work has on those we serve.

💡 A common misconception is that nonprofit leaders are not as innovative as their for-profit counterparts. Nonprofit leaders must operate on smaller budgets, and with public accountability; they must effectively and strategically lead their organizations to serve their designated missions.

🤝 As a member of the YNPN Board, I’m excited to network with other young professionals and build an inclusive community as we grow as a chapter.

🙂‍↕️ For anyone considering joining, YNPN Detroit offers a unique opportunity to connect with your peers who are at similar levels in their careers.

💫 It is a great opportunity to collaborate and grow your network and leadership skills, so we can become the next generation of nonprofit leaders and promote social good!

Happy Thursday, fellow professionals! Welcome to another new board member introduction. Meet Kelsey!

***

🚀 Hi, everybody! I’m Kelsey Royer, MPH, and I got my Master of Public Health and my Bachelor’s in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of Toledo. Go Rockets!

🚪 At my last job, I joined our company’s philanthropy committee and quickly realized it was my favorite part of the role. I loved planning volunteer events and finding ways to give back to the community! That experience really opened the door to where I am now.

🎒 Coordinating a large-scale back-to-school backpack giveaway for 400+ kids has been one of the most rewarding moments so far. Watching families light up when their child receives a backpack full of supplies reminds me why this work matters!

☝️ Don’t believe the myth that nonprofit work is somehow “less professional” than roles in the for-profit world. The strategy, creativity, and innovation happening in this space every day are nothing short of inspiring, and it takes real skill to lead with both heart and results.

🤝 As a member of the YNPN Board, I’m really looking forward to connecting with others who are passionate about making a difference in Metro Detroit. I love being part of spaces where people support and learn from one another, and I think YNPN is a great place for that!

🌱 If you’re looking for community in a space where you can grow both personally and professionally, YNPN is the place. You’ll find people who genuinely care about the work and want to help each other succeed.

We hope you had a wonderful long weekend! As we settle into September, take a couple minutes to get to know another one of our new board members, Daniel Arini.

💙 Hello, everyone! I’m Daniel, and I’m a member of the Membership Committee for YNPN Detroit. I graduated from the University of Michigan – Dearborn, where I earned a degree in Environmental Studies in Resource Policy and Management.

🐻 My first interaction with a nonprofit organization was when I joined the Cub Scouts back in first grade. I don’t know where I’d be without Scouting! The program greatly improved my self-esteem and confidence, inspiring me to help others come into their own ever since.

🪻 So far, my favorite moment in the nonprofit sector has been seeing people light up when they receive a free native garden kit from Adapt: Community Supported Ecology (adaptecology.org).

🤝 As a member of the YNPN Board, I’m excited to help dispel the myth that young professionals don’t build careers in the nonprofit space.

Many early-career professionals are deeply mission-driven and ambitious about career growth – which is why I’m ready to get to know our members and their needs through new engagement strategies. More to come!

👋 Whether you’re just starting out in your career, you’re a seasoned veteran, or you’re making a career change, the YNPN community has your back. We would love to have you!

✏️Back-to-school season means new faces. Over the next few weeks, you’ll get to hear from the newest board members of the Detroit chapter of the Young Nonprofit Professionals Network, beginning with Yours Truly!

💚 I’m Ada, and I earned my Bachelor’s of Science in Microbiology at Michigan State University, along with a graduate certificate from Elms College and a selection of certifications in marketing and hospitality.

🔎 One of my earliest nonprofit roles was as a Bilingual Community Engagement Specialist. I helped so many neighbors by leading and supporting a range of initiatives, and it made me curious to see how else I could help!

👶🏾 So far, my favorite moment in the nonprofit sector has been the Baby Bag Distribution.

When an annual community baby shower was under threat of being canceled due to COVID-19, I led the team that partnered with fellow nonprofits and local businesses to safely reimagine the event, bringing much-needed supplies and information to local small children and their families.

🤝 A major myth about nonprofits is that they only exist in certain industries or for specific clientele.

As the recently appointed Marketing Chair, I’m excited to dispel that myth by raising awareness about YNPN Detroit and all it has to offer. It’s not just a resource for nonprofit professionals – it’s a community where all can be involved!
