"Pets are family." 🏠❤️RedRover.org/JoinResponders

Happy National Volunteer Week! Every day this week, we’re highlighting our Volunteer Stories. For volunteer Laurie, our deployment in Michigan last year was more than just a service project – it was a way to give back to the community that brought her own rescue dog into her life.

Lorie joined our RedRover Responders team helping Dog Aide in Detroit, where we worked to get dogs off heavy chains and into spacious covered enclosures filled with new beds, toys, and treats.

If you have been thinking about volunteering but need to take that final step, Lorie has one piece of advice: "Just do it." Our RedRover Responders team is a supportive community of people who will welcome you and help every step of the way. 🐾✨

Brass has officially had enough of this rain 🌧️

Mud everywhere. Yards completely soaked. Puddles that never seem to dry. Even the dogs are over it.

This sweet face is doing his best to stay cheerful, but you can tell he is ready for sunshine, dry ground, and a place to actually sit without sinking

We are right there with you, Brass. Bring on the sun ☀️ . Let everything dry out. Let the zoomies return without the mud bath 🐕💨

Pure curiosity and excitement.

He doesn’t know what to do first. Sniffing, snorting, tail wagging like crazy, then a few careful licks while he figures it out.

For some dogs, even simple joys are brand new.

They still get excited when someone shows up.

Two dogs. Chained, living in igloos outside. Waiting. And yet the moment our volunteers arrive, their whole world lights up ✨

No dog should have to live their entire life at the end of a chain. But this is still the reality for so many 💔

They don’t stop hoping. We don’t stop showing up.

You don’t forget a dog like Jessie 💕

She’s been a volunteer favorite for years and one look at that smile tells you exactly why. Soft eyes. Gentle soul. The kind of presence that makes people stop and stay a little longer.

Jessie is a senior now, and while her life may not look like the “typical” happy ending, don’t let that fool you. She is thriving. She gets her walks, her attention, her moments of joy and connection every single day 🐾

And most importantly, she is loved. Deeply.

Some dogs don’t need perfect to be happy. They just need consistency, care, and people who see them. Jessie has that.

And she hasn’t stopped smiling.

You pull up for outreach expecting the usual… and instead find this 🐶☀️

Completely at peace. Curled up in the sun. Finally resting 💤

Moments like this are why we do what we do 🤍 Not every visit starts in crisis. Sometimes, it is a small sign that something is going right.

And those moments matter just as much

This is the power of community coming together for animals.

We are incredibly grateful to KONG for their generous donation of nearly 1000 KONG toys, and to RedRover for coordinating this collaboration. This is what impact looks like when organizations come together with purpose.

Enrichment is not a luxury for dogs. It is essential for their wellbeing, their confidence, and their ability to thrive.

Moments like this matter.

And yes, there are a lot of very happy dogs right now.

Handsome Abel 😍
This hunk loves his mama dearly and deserves to stay where he is loved and well taken care of as an indoor dog. His mom has fallen on hard times and just needs a helping hand. We provided Abel with food, treats, and a toy for the month ♥️

Full bowls shouldn’t be a luxury.

Every month, we deliver over 12,000 pounds of dog food straight to homes across Detroit. Not warehouses. Not waiting lists. Right to the dogs who need it most.

Behind every delivery is a team showing up week after week, knocking on doors, building trust, and making sure no dog goes hungry.

The work is constant. The need is real. And our volunteers never stop.

Because for these dogs, this isn’t just food. It’s the difference between struggling and staying together.

Not every story goes as planned, but some still find a beautiful ending.

Weiland’s owner was deployed overseas, and a family member stepped in to care for him. That family member is also part of the Dog Aide community. When his owner returned to the states, he wasn’t able to come back to Michigan, and they couldn’t be reunited.

But Weiland landed somewhere special.

He is happy, safe, and deeply loved. He gets along great with the resident dogs and is thriving in a home where he truly belongs.

It may not be the ending anyone expected, but it’s a good one — because Weiland is exactly where he’s meant to be.

He’s smiling… but look closer.

This is who we meet on the streets every single week. Dogs full of love, standing in environments that don’t give them what they need.

We go to them. No barriers. We meet families exactly where they are and step in with immediate support to change the trajectory of that dog’s life.

Because right now, people are struggling. And when people struggle, their pets feel it too.

So we show up. With food. With supplies. With real help that makes a difference right away.

This is what it looks like to make lives better.

One dog. One street. One block. One neighborhood at a time.
