Capuchin Soup Kitchen The Capuchin Soup Kitchen serves people facing challenging circumstances through its many programs.

The Capuchin Soup Kitchen got its official start in 1929 following the collapse of the stock market and the beginning of the Great Depression when the Capuchins began serving meals to those in need. Today, the Capuchin Soup Kitchen includes the Meldrum and Conner Street Meal Programs, the Capuchin Services Center, the Earthworks Urban Farm Program, the Rosa Parks Children & Youth Program, the Jefferson House Alcohol & Drug Rehabilitation Program, the ROPE (Reaching Our Potential Everyday) Program, and our On the Rise Bakery Café.

Partnerships are a huge part of the work at the Capuchin Soup Kitchen.

Our partnership with MIRA Midwest Independent Retailers Association & Foundation is one that helps give the guests at our Services Center food pantry with a dignified experience and provides turkeys for our annual Thanksgiving Food Giveaway. With their help, we are fighting food insecurity every day.

Friday, October 16 is observed as World Food Day. The theme for 2026 is "Innovate today. Nourish tomorrow." This theme highlights the importance of "using technology, data, and agricultural innovation to build resilient, inclusive, and sustainable food systems that tackle global hunger and climate challenges."

Our Refettorio Detroit project is one way that the Capuchin Soup Kitchen looks too deepen our commitment to a sustainable food system. Our Earthworks Urban Farm has long been involved in these efforts.

Pope Leo the XIV in address to the United Nations World Food Programme in June stated: "Together, we share the urgent task of confronting hunger and malnutrition, while also tackling the underlying structural causes that sustain them. To meet this task effectively, we must examine the challenges before us, their underlying causes, and the paths toward lasting solutions.”
