DBG - Detroit is a 501(C) 3 nonprofit that develops good citizenship in urban youth through a demanding boxing program combined with strong academic support and a connection to the community through volunteer service.

Not your traditional career fair.

Our students and alumni had real conversations at our networking event. They introduced themselves, asked thoughtful questions and learned about the journeys that led our guests to where they are today.

Each student also carried a Networking Passport to record who they met, what they learned, the advice they received, and the connections they want to keep growing.

Thank you to every professional and alumnus who gave their time, shared their story and invested in our students. This is how Detroit's workforce of the future gets built: one conversation at a time.

When families and educators work together, something powerful happens. The relationships surrounding a young person shape how supported, confident and prepared they feel to navigate what's next.

This isn't a new idea, it's a tradition. Long before formal youth programs existed, families and communities were already pooling their time, resources and wisdom to make sure every child had what they needed. Youth development truly takes a village. That's what we're building here at DBG.

That's why family engagement is central to our model. Our Parent Committee bring their ideas, experiences, questions and commitment to the table to make our collective impact even stronger.

The most effective youth development happens with families, not just for their kids.

Service isn’t just something we talk about at DBG. It’s an expectation.

This weekend, we welcomed a group of former Detroit Lions players, who spent their Saturday serving alongside our community, cleaning classrooms, painting, and helping care for the space our students call home.

That example matters because every DBG student makes the same commitment: to lift as they climb.

Throughout their time at DBG, our students are expected to serve others. And when they become alumni and adults, that responsibility doesn’t end. We believe growth comes with an obligation to give back, strengthen your community, and create opportunities for those coming behind you.

Thank you for showing our students what that looks like in action.

Meet Quintin Love. When he joined DBG at 8 years old, what started as a desire to be a professional boxer quickly turned into a love for photography. Sparked by a DBG field trip to a local photography studio and driven by the team encouraging "books before boxing," DBG gave him exposure to new interests. The mentorship he received and the staff who felt more like family than supervisors, gave him direction.

Today, Quintin is a Michigan State University grad, the first in his family to earn a degree, a proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, and is running his own photography and videography business, JRFilms.

That's what it means to be driven by growth. Not chasing one fixed outcome, but staying open to where your passions and interests lead you.

DBG Scholars take Ann Arbor! 🏈〽️

This past weekend, we took a group of our students to the University of Michigan football game, and it was an experience they won't forget. Even better, they got to meet Bryce Underwood, quarterback and Wolverines team captain!

A huge thank you to the University of Michigan Credit Union (UMCU) for generously hosting our group. Opportunities like this show our students what's possible and remind them that big dreams are within reach.

When working with young people, you learn quickly that the small things are rarely small.

Think about the time a meal after school helped you stay focused. When a ride home made it possible to get there in the first place. Did you have a trusted adult who made the difference between feeling stuck and believing you can keep going?

Youth development is often framed around big interventions and major milestones. But lasting change is built through the consistent, everyday supports that surround a young person over time.

That’s a lesson we learn time and again at DBG: when a community consistently shows up for young people, small investments can create outsized impact. Lasting change isn't built on big, one-time interventions, it's built on the everyday supports that surround a young person over time.

Aja Anderson joined DBG in 2012 alongside her brothers, first for the athletics, then for everything else - tutoring, homework help, a place to land after school.

Through every moment of uncertainty, she points to our founder Khali and the DBG trainers as the people who kept showing up. From helping her graduate high school to the day she hung her phlebotomy certificate on the wall, she was pushed to explore her future every time she needed to hear it.

Today, Aja is an LPN in the ER at Corewell Health Grosse Pointe, and even recently found herself on the other side of care while helping a current DBG student get the treatment he needed.

"Khali started to pull me in because he saw something better in me. Like, 'Look, I know you can do something better. I know you can do something that can change your life, change how you see things.' Being a nurse definitely changed a lot, how I see the world. I see so much now."

That's what we mean when we say growth never graduates. It doesn't end at graduation. It doesn't end when DBG closes for the day. It follows our alumni into every "what's next" moment life throws at them.

Chef Lea Addington and Emmanuel "Mr. E" Smith had a wonderful time on the Fox 2 Cooking School this morning, showing off the kind of scratch-cooked, nutritious meals our students enjoy every day.

At DBG, food is part of our mission. We serve family-style meals to students daily made right from our kitchen, send home meal kits for families, involving students in the cooking and serving process. We bring in Guest Chefs and offer cooking classes and career readiness for students interested in culinary arts.

A good meal and lifelong cooking tips helps remove one more barrier standing between a student and their full potential, creating the kind of consistent, supportive environment where young people can learn, build relationships and thrive.
