Grief can take many shapes and forms, and the healing process can look different for everyone. We're introducing a series of grief support and death education events this year that are accessible, comfortable and open to anyone who's on a path toward healing.

Next up in the series: Join us on June 14 at 3 p.m. for "Rooted in Love," a gathering for those who are carrying grief related to parents or parenthood. The experience will include guided reflection, gentle movement, a sound bat, and community sharing. Led by two certified counselors, we hope this event will provide a welcoming space for you to connect with others who are on this journey, too.

The event is free, but please register in advance at elmwood-rooted-in-love.eventbrite.com.

Join us this Saturday, June 6 at 10 a.m. as storytellers bring history to life at Elmwood!

Juneteenth commemorates the effective end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, General Gordon Granger ordered the enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation β€” issued two and a half years earlier β€” in Galveston, Texas.

On this special Juneteenth tour, hear freedom stories from Elmwood, brought to life by members of the Detroit Association of Black Storytellers. You'll meet abolitionist leaders, freedom seekers and soldiers who fought to end slavery in the U.S.

After the tour, head to the Camp Ward Juneteenth Festival at the nearby site of Camp Ward, where soldiers who enlisted in the 102nd U.S. Colored Troops trained for battle.

The tour is free, but please sign up β€” capacity is limited! Tours are held in most weather at Elmwood, but we'll alert all registered visitors in the event of a severe weather cancelation no later than Saturday at 8 a.m.

It's a gorgeous day in Detroit! Our office is closed today in observance of Memorial Day, but we welcome you to visit and spend time on our grounds until the gate closes at 7:00 p.m. You can also stop outside the office and take a carnation or a flag for your loved one's grave.

We'll return to normal business hours tomorrow.

"History will tell us how Michigan responded to that call β€” she sent to the conflict more than 90,000 of her sons,” he said. β€œOf these, more than 13,000 died on the battlefield, or from wounds and sickness. Many lie in untraceable localities; the resting places of others are marked and known. It is proposed that, on this day, these graves be visited and decorated by those who loved their tenants in life and who honor them in death. … For this purpose, we are met in this place of quiet beauty, consecrated to most of us by thoughts of the kindred and friends that lie in its bosom. In the flush of the perfect beauty of full springtime, while the verdure of tree and grass is unstained, and the bloom of flowers is unfaded, we have gathered some of these to place upon the graves of our heroes, as tokens of our remembrances of them.”

Romeyn died in 1886 and is buried at Elmwood in Section B. We'll visit his gravesite as part of our Memorial Day History Walk this Sunday, May 24 at 10 a.m. We hope you'll join us as we tell these stories β€” a token of our continued remembrance today.

The tour is free, but please sign up via the link in our bio!

Grief can be a tough journey, and often an isolating one. But you don't have to carry it alone.

We invite you to join us at Elmwood for a new series of programs for anyone who is grieving β€” or seeking community, comfort and conversation about the end of life.

Next Monday, May 18 at 1 p.m., join grief coach and death educator Kristy Bishop for a grief walk through the cemetery. This walk is designed for anyone carrying loss, change, or emotional weight. You do not need to have a loved one buried at the cemetery or a specific reason for attending. The walk includes light guidance, time for personal reflection, and the option to be in quiet community with others. There is no pressure to share or participate in any particular way.

This event is free, but please sign up via the link below. Can't make it? Sign up for our e-news or watch this space for more grief support and death education events coming soon. M
