Today we honor the Indigenous communities who were here before us, and reflect on the role horses played in their history. Indigenous oral histories show that Native American communities, such as the Comanche and Shoshone, integrated the care and keeping of horses into their culture in the early 1600s. Many Plains and Western Native American tribes viewed horses as sacred companions or family members rather than just property. They trained their horses through patience and building trust, and honored their individuality with elaborate decorative saddles, blankets, and masks. Integrating horses into their lives opened up many possibilities; including improving mobility, hunting, and trading opportunities. May we always remember those who came before us, and strive to honor their legacy.
