Detroit Horse Power has brought hundreds of Detroit youth to partner horse barns outside the city for free summer horse camps and an after-school program since 2015. These programs teach how to ride and care for horses in order to develop critical character skills - Perseverance, Empathy, Responsible risk-taking, Confidence, Self-control (PERCS). Detroit Horse Power is also prepared to transform a

14-acre demolished Detroit school site into the largest urban equestrian center in the country. Completing this project by 2026 will increase the scale and accessibility of Detroit Horse Power’s youth impact program and strengthen the Detroit neighborhoods where students grow up.

As Detroit Horse Power has grown over the years, we are very fortunate to have been guided by longtime board members who have consistently and generously shared their time, insight and resources to help our organization achieve its goals. After reaching their maximum term limits, we are sad and grateful to share that Cathy LaMont and Danielle Harling have termed off of our board after serving three consecutive three-year terms. Each has left a significant mark on Detroit Horse Power as an organization and will absolutely continue to be a part of the exciting new chapter we have ahead. Please joining us in thanking Cathy and Danielle for their years of service and dedication!

Last week, Detroit Horse Power had a powerful opportunity to gather folks for a beautiful event at the Manoogian Foundation House during the Mackinac Policy Conference. We are so grateful to work together with Julie Raisch and the Restore the Horse Foundation as well as our phenomenal partners at PNC Bank to make outreach events like this possible!

As we wrap up Mental Health Awareness Month, it’s important to remember that mental health is health and remain mindful of the impact it has on our daily lives. The partnership humans can have with horses is so powerful. Follow along as we continue our journey to open the nations largest urban equestrian center at the end of 2026!

That’s a wrap on the 2025-26 after school program year!!

This year flew by and we are so proud of the growth we’ve seen in our students, not just with the PERCS traits but also in their leadership skills and community building. We’re already looking forward to our next program year but up first…summer camp!! Registration is underway and we have already had a record number of students sign up early. We are so thankful to our community and the excitement around our growth.

Stay tuned, we’ll take you with us to camp, it starts June 15th. 🐴✨

This Mental Health Awareness Month, we’re partnering with Horses for Mental Health to raise support for something truly life-changing.

Through the healing connection between horses and humans, our students gain confidence, empathy, emotional regulation, and more; all through programming offered completely free of cost. When you donate to DHP, you help us provide meals, free programs, free transportation and more to our students every week. Your support doesn’t just maintain our programs— it helps change lives.

Join us and become part of something bigger:

The rain cleared up just in time for us to celebrate Joe Louis’ birthday on the Greenway!

DHP is a proud supporter of the Joe Louis Greenway, a 29 mile trail system that connects 23 Detroit neighborhoods for biking, walking and recreation. A portion of the Greenway also goes right behind our barn site on Fenkell and Linwood! If you haven’t visited the Greenway yet, be sure to check it out this summer and give them a follow 💚

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and we are partnering with Horses for Mental Health to reduce the stigma around mental health and show how horses can help us heal. We’ve seen firsthand how connecting with horses allows our youth to decompress and be present in the moment. Throughout the month of May we will be sharing more info about Horses for Mental Health and how you can support this mission.
