Detroit Horse Power

Detroit Horse Power We partner with horses to create transformative opportunities, helping Detroit’s youth and communities grow, connect, and thrive.

Detroit Horse Power has brought hundreds of Detroit youth to partner horse barns outside the city for free summer horse camps and an after-school program since 2015. These programs teach how to ride and care for horses in order to develop critical character skills - Perseverance, Empathy, Responsible risk-taking, Confidence, Self-control (PERCS). Detroit Horse Power is also prepared to transform a

14-acre demolished Detroit school site into the largest urban equestrian center in the country. Completing this project by 2026 will increase the scale and accessibility of Detroit Horse Power’s youth impact program and strengthen the Detroit neighborhoods where students grow up.

The end of summer camp is always bittersweet, 8 weeks flies by when you spend it having this much fun! This year is especially important to us. Next year, we will be hosting our very first summer camp season at our new equestrian facility in Detroit. This will give our campers shorter commutes, more time in the saddle, and so much more.

We are so thankful to all our staff, counselors, and volunteers for working hard to make this summer our best one yet. To our barn partners who hosted us this summer, STARZ Equestrian and Cedar Ridge Equestrian Center: thank you for opening your space to us, sharing your horses with us, and helping us succeed. We would not be where we are today without all of the support from our equestrian community. We are so lucky to be surrounded by so much positivity and kindness!

We are grateful to Strawberry Solar for recently installing the solar array on our roof! These panels are sized to the energy our building will consume, which will be drastically lower thanks to the geothermal wells we drilled in April and our super-insulated building envelope (stay tuned for more on this soon!) We love that we are building a structure that will serve our needs while being environmentally conscious.

Summer camp would not be possible without our camp counselors and summer staff, they are simply the best!

We are so lucky to have these kind, dedicated, supportive young people on our team this summer. All of them are current or former DHP students who simply love horses and want to help our campers have the best experience possible. Some of them are working for us through Grow Detroit Young Talent (GDYT), a wonderful program that places young adults in Detroit into summer jobs. Through this program they also receive financial literacy training and other resources.

Though summer camp is coming to an end this week (sad) we hope they know how appreciated they are! Sonia, Kyla, Jada, E’lese, Kaylan and A’marria, thank you for all your hard work this summer. Each of you have made a lasting impact on so many youth! We are so so proud of you 🥰

The search continues 👀🔎

We’ve had some wonderful folks reach out interested in donating their horses and we are so thankful for all the support we are receiving on this campaign! That being said, we are still searching for more horses to add to our herd. There is a careful selection and vetting process being carried out in coordination with our Barn Manager Anthony. If you or someone you know is interested in learning more, please reach out to Anthony: [email protected]

Week 7 of camp at Cedar Ridge Equestrian 🐴
This week we had students from our after school program at camp! They were eager to get back in the saddle, not having ridden since May. Some were a little apprehensive at first, but they quickly got back into the swing of things, showing confidence and perseverance. Since Cedar Ridge has an outdoor eventing course, we also practiced walking through water, which was such a fun learning experience.
Thank you to Vienna Kung Fu for coming out today and giving our students a fun lesson in Kung Fu and self defense basics! We love having visitors at camp. We can’t wait to be back at Cedar Ridge next week for our final week of summer camp 2026! 💫

We'd love to see you soon for community lunch at the Green Garage! Every first and third Friday from 12:00-1:00 PM, we open our doors to the community around us for lunch, learning, and opportunities to grow your network. All are welcome!

☀️ This Friday, August 7, join us for a community conversation about summer in Detroit. Our inspiration comes from "Black Summers," a new book from Wayne State Press that features contributions by longtime Green Garage community members Keith Owens and Pamela Hilliard Owens. They'll be here to kick things off, as will our friends from Source Booksellers, who will have copies of the book available for purchase!

🐎 On Friday, Aug 21, David Silver will share an update about business-in-residence Detroit Horse Power . They're currently building the nation's largest urban equestrian center on Detroit's west side. We're looking forward to hearing about their progress and getting a sneak peek of the sustainable design elements of this transformative development.

🥪 12:00-1:00 at 4444 2nd Ave. Light lunch provided by Seasons Market & Cafe. No registration is required. Join us after lunch for a tour of our sustainably rehabilitated historic building!

We’ve had a lot of traffic and new followers here lately so we thought we’d reintroduce ourselves. If you’re new here, it’s nice to meet you! If you’ve been here for a while, thanks for sticking with us, your support is everything. ❤️

We are and have always been a completely free program for Detroit youth, providing after school programming and summer camp. A lot may be changing with our new facility, but our mission and values remain the same. We are here to serve our youth and community, providing a safe space to connect with horses and each other, building life and leaderships skills and having tons of fun while we do it!
