Hope Ministries

We provide food, clothing, shelter and long-term life recovery programs for people who are homeless, hungry, abused or addicted.

Our mission is to rescue those who are homeless, hungry, abused or addicted, providing opportunities for hope, recovery and restoration through the love of Jesus Christ. We operate the following ministry centers around Des Moines:

-Bethel Mission, our shelter for homeless men

-Door of Faith, our long-term life recovery center for homeless men

-Hope Center for Women and Children, offering short-

term programming and long-term life recovery for single women and mothers with children

-Hope Cafe, our community dining hall, serving free meals every day of the year to homeless, near-homeless and hungry people

-Hope Ministries Thrift, offering low-cost clothing, furniture, shoes, household goods and more at two store locations

Every story matters.

In addition to providing warm meals and safe shelter, men and women participating in our life recovery programs receive comprehensive, personalized care.

Through six areas of emphasis including:
- Spiritual development
- Recovery
- Work Skills Training
- Life Skills, like personal finance and healthy relationships
- Education
- Health

We address the needs of the whole person. We know one size doesn’t fit all, that’s why our resident advocates work one-on-one to help men and women overcome challenges and set goals unique to the individual.

Local Des Moines glass artist and a member of Hope Ministries Empowering Women philanthropy group, Tilda Swanson, created a custom glass art piece to be displayed in the prayer room at our Hope Ministries Center for Women and Children.

Her inspiration for the piece included the migration patterns of monarch butterflies as we have them as displayed as a symbol of transformation throughout Hope Center. Tilda shared more about her inspiration saying, “To me the forest image is a natural cathedral and the path represents the path we are all on, with a golden glow guiding us towards God’s light, to encourage us along the path and inspire us to continue.”

As a resident advocate, Nick encourages men and holds them accountable as they aspire to reach their goals and take their next steps in life. We are so grateful for his heart to walk alongside and serve hurting men in our community.

The back-to-school season is upon us and we are so grateful to have generous partners to help ensure the moms and kids at Hope Ministries Center for Women and Children have the essentials to start the school year off strong! Our friends at Baker Group collected a variety of supplies to provide essentials now, and later, for the families in our care.

At Hope Ministries, we rely on God’s guidance and blessing. Our staff and volunteers regularly pray for the men, women and children in our care, as well as for our supporters and community. When you pray with us, you’re standing alongside your neighbors in need and asking God to bring hope and restoration.

Our monthly prayer calendar is a wonderful resource to pray for the many corners of ministry including individuals in our care, volunteers and staff.
