Denver’s 64% reduction in unsheltered homelessness is something to celebrate and has captured the national spotlight in The New York Times [10/13/26]. But as the national conversation debates the use of law enforcement and encampment sweeps, The Gathering Place remains clear: we cannot police our way out of an economic and humanitarian crisis.

The path out of homelessness begins with access to safe shelter, supportive services, and housing with dignity.

Through Elati Village, we are that pathway by providing the 24/7 staffing, comprehensive case management, and basic needs support that women and gender-diverse individuals need to find stability. Lasting solutions are built on a foundation of safety and trauma-informed care.

“Philanthropy is ‘love of humankind.’”

For one of our dedicated kitchen volunteers, The Gathering Place has been part of her family's story for more than 20 years.

Her daughter, artist Jordan Casteel, was first introduced to The Gathering Place as a middle school student through a community service partnership with The Logan School. For two years, she volunteered in Betsy's Cupboard, the children's center, and the front desk—an early experience that helped shape her connection to community and, in her words, influenced the humanity captured in her large-scale portraits.

Today, her mother continues that family legacy, spending five hours every Monday volunteering in our kitchen.

“Being in service ... fills my heart and soul.”
