April is Deaf History Month, and we’re excited to share a piece of history about hearing dogs 🐾

Their origin began with a hard of hearing woman named Mrs. Elva Janke, whose dog naturally alerted her to important sounds in her environment.

After her dog passed away, she reached out through local news in search of someone who could train a dog to provide these same sound alerts. That search led her to Agnes McGrath, and together they created the “Hearing Ear Program,” pioneering the training of hearing dogs. Joined by In 1974, Martha Foss, Emlynn Wood, and Sandy Sterker, they created International Hearing Dog Inc in 1978.

Today, now Paragon Service Dogs, we continue to provide hearing dogs to provide independence, safety, and connection for Deaf and hard of hearing individuals—thanks to the vision and determination of these woman.

To our volunteers,

There are no words to adequately express our gratitude for each of you—pictured and not pictured—who are so vital to our organization. Without you, we would not exist. It is you who allow us to send trained service dogs out into the world to make a better place.

Thank you to our puppy raisers for the sleepless nights and patient guidance, our weekend companions for sharing their love, the puppy sitters who provide much-needed rejuvenation, our on-site volunteers who bring joy to our dogs’ lives, our outreach volunteers who share our mission, and our inmate handlers who contribute their skills and expertise to our dogs, our volunteer groups, for ensuring our facility will last for years to come, and to everyone else who supports us in so many ways—you are not forgotten.

This week is for celebrating you. Happy Volunteer Appreciation Month!
