CoTESOL Fall Convention !

Dr. Tatiana Nekrasova-Beker from Colorado State University
will be presenting "Data-Driven Learning in Higher Education: Developing Teacher Expertise" at the 49th Annual Fall Convention!

As a pedagogical approach, data-driven learning (DDL) is grounded in the principles of inquiry-based learning and offers numerous benefits for language learners. These include fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills, encouraging engagement with authentic language data, and promoting learner autonomy (Boulton & Vyatkina, 2021). While research generally supports the positive impact of DDL on language development, its effectiveness depends largely on teachers’ ability to design, facilitate, and implement DDL activities successfully in the classroom. Because DDL requires familiarity with corpora and corpus-based tools, teachers need adequate training to use these resources effectively and confidently.

This workshop aims to provide professional development focused on DDL methodologies that support the integration of corpus-based activities into language teaching. The session will begin with an overview of key DDL principles, followed by demonstrations of corpus tools that can be used to explore authentic language patterns and develop DDL materials. In addition, the presenter will share examples of classroom activities designed for diverse groups of language learners enrolled in academic programs at a public research university in Western U.S. Through these examples, participants will gain practical insights into designing and implementing DDL activities in their own teaching contexts.

CoTESOL is excited to announce the keynote speakers for our 49th Annual Fall Convention!
Our second Keynote Speaker is Dr. Tania Hogan, Executive Director for The BUENO Center for Multicultural Education and Professor of Education at CU Boulder School of Education.

Dr. Hogan leads with a justice-centered approach that recognizes bilingualism not just as an academic strength, but as a source of identity, resilience, and cultural wealth. A proud native Spanish speaker and former multilingual learner from Acapulco, Mexico, Dr. Hogan’s lived experiences deeply inform her leadership and unwavering commitment to building equitable, community-rooted educational systems. Her work positions bilingual education as a transformative force that affirms students’ full humanity while disrupting systems that have historically marginalized their voices. Under her leadership, the BUENO Center has deepened partnerships with school districts, community organizations, and advocacy networks to advance research, teacher preparation programs and pathways that honor the knowledge and assets of Latine, immigrant, and Indigenous communities, ensuring that multilingual learners are not just supported, but powerfully centered and celebrated.

Dr. Hogan’s current research focuses on centering the strengths of newcomer families through storytelling and culturally responsive technology that challenges bias and promotes digital inclusion. She also examines how professional development around leading for language equity impacts school and district practices, shifting educator mindsets and systems to better serve multilingual learners. Her work continues to inspire transformative change in both PK–12 and higher education by ensuring that the voices of historically marginalized communities are not only heard, but powerfully centered.

Dr. Hogan received a bachelor’s degree in Psychology, a master’s in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Bilingual Education, and a doctorate in Leadership and Educational Equity with an emphasis on Latinx Learners and Communities, all from the University of Colorado Denver.

Our first Keynote is Jeff Hutcheson, Director of Advocacy and Public Policy for TESOL International Association.

Jeff Hutchison works closely with TESOL’s members and affiliates to ensure its diverse voices are amplified and its interests served at all levels – locally, federally, and globally. With over 25 years of experience in the field of English language teaching and learning, he is a passionate advocate for the rights and needs of TESOL professionals and students worldwide. As the Director of Advocacy and Public Policy at TESOL International Association, he leads the association's efforts to influence local, state, federal, and global policies that affect the TESOL community and advance the interests of its members and affiliates. In addition to his role at TESOL, he is a founding partner at Global Ed Professionals, a consultancy firm that provides solutions for internationalizing the campus and preparing students for the global community.
