Southminster Presbyterian Church, Dayton, Ohio We are an inclusive church, supporting all peoples in their faith journeys regardless of gender, age, orientation, or ethnicity.

We are an inclusive church located in Dayton, Ohio affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA); supporting all peoples in their faith journeys regardless of gender, age, orientation, or ethnicity. When we meet in person, Sunday mornings typically begin with adult education classes, followed by a worship service at 10:00 AM which includes songs (old and new), prayer, scripture, and an engaging message. Elementary and preschool children leave the partway through the service for Sunday School that goes until 11:30 am. We also encourage everyone to participate in activities throughout the week: Team meetings, various classes, and support groups. In addition, we continue to focus on local, regional, and global missions through volunteerism and/or financial support. Our church community is often inspired by those who are learning how to grow their own faith.

Read Genesis 16:1–15; 21:8–21. What do you think this story tells us about God’s care?

Talk about the name Hagar gives God—the God who sees. When might someone need to know that God sees and hears them? How can we help someone who is hurting?

Pray. Make a “God Hears Us” prayer list. Write down the names of people who need God's help and pray for them together during the week.

This week’s Shine family Bible activities:

Read Genesis 13. Why do you think Abraham gave Lot the first choice?

Talk. Think of a disagreement your family might have. Take turns suggesting peaceful solutions. Talk about which solutions would help everyone feel heard.

Pray. God of the north, south, east, and west, thank you for this place we call home. Help us to love and care for each other. Amen.

This week’s Shine at Home family Bible activity:

Read Genesis 12:1–9. Imagine what it was like for Abram and Sarai to pack up everything and travel to a new home.

Talk. Imagine packing your belongings to move to a new city or town. What would you miss about your home if you had to move?

Pray. Loving God, thank you for being with us wherever we go. Amen.

Other churches are currently sharing these words. They ring true for our sentiment at Southminster.

Friends, please be aware of our policy regarding children in church:

If your kids are loud, please still come to church.

If you’re running late because getting everyone out the door was a battle, please still come to church.

If your toddler won’t sit still, please still come to church.

If your baby needs to eat, please still come to church.

If your child asks questions at the least convenient time, please still come to church.

If someone cries, drops a toy, needs a snack, or has to make their third trip to the bathroom, please still come to church.

If your child doesn’t know all the words, all the prayers, or exactly when to sit and stand, please still come to church.

If you feel like you spent the entire service managing your children and heard approximately 12% of the sermon, please still come to church.

If Sunday morning feels messy instead of peaceful, please still come to church.

If you’re worried your children are distracting the people around you, please still come to church. Because children do not learn how to be part of the Church by staying home until they can sit quietly.

If your child has a disability, please still come to church.

They learn by being here.

They learn the hymns by hearing us sing them.

They learn the prayers by hearing us pray them.

They learn to worship by watching us worship.

They learn that church is home because we make room for them here.

The wiggles, whispers, dropped crayons, crying babies, and little voices are not interruptions to the life of the Church.

They are evidence that the Church is alive.

So bring the babies. Bring the toddlers. Bring the big kids. Come late. Sit in the back. Sit in the front. Step out when you need to and come right back in.

Just come.

Children are not simply the future of the Church. They are part of the Church right now.

“Grace is the celebration of life, relentlessly hounding all the non-celebrants in the world. It is a floating, cosmic bash shouting its way through the streets of the universe, flinging the sweetness of its cassations to every window, pounding at every door in a hilarity beyond all liking and happening, until the prodigals come out at last and dance, and the elder brothers finally take their fingers out of their ears.“
