Today, donors across the country are celebrating by recommending grants from their donor-advised funds (DAFs) to causes they care about.

When you recommend a grant to East End Community Services by WestCare Ohio, you're helping children thrive, supporting families through challenges, strengthening health and wellbeing, and creating pathways to employment and long-term stability.

This past Saturday, Mission of Mary Cooperative held a canning class at the East End Community Services Charles D. Berry Foundation Whole Family Hub 🥕

EECS Gardening and Nutrition Education Coordinator, Dr. Emily Holmes, joined Mission of Mary staff along with class participants from the community to peel, chop, dice, and pickle the morning away! 🌱

Class participants learned basic canning steps and safety while preparing a big batch of carrot pickles with carrots, dill, and garlic grown in the Mission of Mary gardens.

Mission of Mary Cooperative uses urban farming and community engagement to strengthen the Twin Towers neighborhood. The organization transforms vacant lots into productive gardens, grows fresh produce, and works alongside residents to improve access to healthy food and create greener, more connected community spaces.

Beyond farming, Mission of Mary offers gardening programs, educational opportunities, and resident-led initiatives that help neighbors build skills, share ideas, and play an active role in shaping their community. Through its focus on food, environmental stewardship, and neighborhood collaboration, the organization supports a healthier and more resilient East Dayton.

🌻What Does Hope Mean to You? 🌻

EECS staff asked this question over the weekend at Ruskin Elementary School where families and neighbors gathered for a Community Resource Fair.

The East End Community Services table provided guests with opportunity to answer this question on squares of colorful fabric. Participants added their squares over the course of the fair, and by the end of the day the results were beautiful—A Tapestry of Hope in Community.

💙 "Hope for me is about not giving up."
🧡 "Hope is an opportunity to make a change."

From its beginning almost 30 years ago, East End Community Services has been committed to a future where everyone in our community thrives. We are committed to strengthening families and our corner of Dayton by advancing education, wellbeing, and economic opportunity.

Thank you to everyone who shared these messages of hope with us this past Saturday, and thank you to everyone in Twin Towers who worked together to host this wonderful community event. We are honored to uplift the children and families we serve while meeting them where they dream.

On Friday, September 25 (Dolly Parton Day), in partnership with Preschool Promise, Brunner Literacy delivered over 8,000 books to Little Free Libraries, schools and community partners throughout the Dayton area! East End Community Services was honored to be one of the receiving partners.

As Dolly said, "You can never get enough books into the hands of enough children," 📖

EECS sends our thanks to both Brunner Literacy Center and Preschool Promise for their commitment to strengthening the Dayton community by making literacy resources more accessible. We are thrilled to share these books with the children and families we serve. Thank you!📚

More than 6,500 people have been reached through programs supported by Montgomery County’s more than $2 million investment using opioid settlement funds.

The county’s new Community Impact Report highlights how these funds are supporting prevention, treatment and recovery services, including substance use disorder treatment, peer recovery support, recovery housing, employment assistance and prevention programming for youth and families.

The funding supported:
• 40% recovery
• 37% treatment
• 23% prevention

The report provides a look at how opioid settlement dollars are being used in our community to help residents prevent substance use, access treatment and build stable lives in recovery.

Thank you to all of the organizations and people working every day to address the opioid crisis and support individuals and families in our community.
