EXCITING NEWS for the ISB and Bass Players across the world! 📣📣📣
Welcome Steve Bailey and Victor Wooten as the new Electric Bass Co-Board Members of the International Society of Bassists!

The International Society of Bassists is now actively incorporating Electric Bassists to our mission of Education, Inspiration and Connection for Bassists across the world.

Our founder, Gary Karr, founded the ISB in 1967. Since 1967, there has been a renaissance and unprecedented growth in bass talent, careers, equipment, technology and the role of commercial and amateur music in peoples’ lives. Today, working bassists are more and more expected to be proficient in both upright and electric bass. Amateur bassists’ curiosities extend to multiple styles of music and multiple instruments. The majority of commercial music recordings in the last decades features electric bassists. The bass presence and excellence that Gary Karr envisioned has surpassed his expectations, and he even said that, in his next life, he would love to be a 7-string electric bass fretless player.

The ISB is thrilled to inspire, educate and connect bassists of all styles and all instruments, and we’re looking forward to the next evolution of Gary Karr’s beloved ISB, featuring not only the best bassists on the plane, but also the best human beings.
Welcome to the family!

📣 2027 Convention Announcement!
Join us June 7-12, 2027 at the University of New Mexico 📍🎶

Hello, Bass Friends!

I’m Dennis Whittaker, president-elect, longtime member of the International Society of Bassists, and chair of the 2027 ISB convention.

I'm thrilled to announce we will celebrate the ISB's 60th anniversary next year, June 7-12, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the Land of Enchantment, hosted by the University of New Mexico Department of Music and the bass studio of Professor Al Laszlo.

The campus is compact, with short walks between buildings. The climate is warm and dry, and New Mexico's delicious red & green chili-based cuisine is almost reason enough to make the trip! Albuquerque is a 60 to 90 minute drive from beautiful Santa Fe, Taos and Los Alamos. It's no wonder that artists from around the world seek out the north central region of New Mexico to create.

The theme of the 2027 convention is “Just Play!” While we'll be featuring performances, lectures and masterclasses by top artists, we'll also be encouraging participation from amateur and non-professional bassists, and we'll shine a spotlight on bassists who have transcended technique to create unique careers and reach non-traditional audiences.

Along with all of this greatness, I am also excited to announce that the ISB will be incorporating electric bass into our 60th anniversary convention and the Society, including our first solo electric bass competition. So for those of you who want to learn from your acoustic or electric bass sisters & brothers, this is absolutely the convention for you.

I hope you’ll consider attending this hub of Bass Love. If you’ve attended an ISB convention, you know there’s no other experience in the world quite like it. If you have not yet been to an ISB convention, then make 2027 the year to enrich your artistic, educational and musical life by taking a deep dive into our beloved bass community. You'll not only meet some of the best bassists on the planet, but also the best human beings.

Watch your email inbox for information about registration and housing.

We can’t wait to see you in Albuquerque next June!

Basst wishes,
Dennis Whittaker
