Hey guys, long post. I do believe everybody that follows us knows we pour our hearts out for every single cat or kitten that comes into the rescue. It's kitten season and we are getting more and more calls every day-and more and more people that we cannot help because we don't have space and finances and everything we wish we had.
So yelling at a rescue for doing everything that they can for a 3 week old kitten - that you brought in and dropped off - for them to care for, that sadly lost his life fighting illness- an illness you claim he didn't have (intake photo below will prove otherwise)when you took him to the vet before surrendering him(glad you took him to the vet though!), despite the vet prescribing medication for respiratory, and puss pouring out of his eyes... is messed up!!!!
We had him 9 hours. 5 hours in rescue, 4 hours in foster.
And then attacking our protocols. Like using an incubator. A nice, big, warm, roomy incubator where three week old kittens belong when they don't have a mom. Or moving him to Foster so that he doesn't come into contact with anything in shelter since 3 week old, sick, and unvaccinated kittens are fragile and require 24/7 monitoring.
And then attacking the Foster like they didn't do everything in their power for this little guy. She was devastated at his loss. It was sudden and heartbreaking.
Or my personal favorite - accusing that rescue of literally starving him. When three separate people fed this kitten. You can only fight so hard with them before you risk aspiration which would be fatal.
Attacking my staff member Shelby, a woman who pours out her every single moment of every single day to making sure these cats have everything they need. That they are cared for meticulously. And not only that, but she loves each and every single one of them. Shelby is literally a Rolodex of every cat that has ever come through the rescue. The sheer amount of love that these cats get from her.... You could not possibly be more wrong with your accusations.
You don't know any of us and you don't know the commitment, time, dedication, frustration, money and tears that we put into every single one of these kitties.
Your chief argument was that he ate fine for you. Oh and that we used the wrong type of syringe since we used a miracle ni**le instead of the hard plastic that could damage his little mouth. This kitten was sick. He didn't get help in time. Blaming the rescue because we couldn't work a miracle.... Every person who had a hand in this kitten did EVERYTHING they possibly could.
I understand you're grieving. I am sorry for your loss. But taking that grief out on the people that did everything they could to give this kitten the best chance is wrong. Just because your vet didn't tell you to use an incubator doesn't mean that our protocols are wrong. It just means he probably would have assumed that you didn't have an incubator.
For the record we did not attack your vet - we did question how this kitty's eyes could be so terrible and the kitten not be prescribed eye medication. He was also covered in fleas. I was very clear when I stated that it was just not common in this area for a cat to go to the vet with eyes like this and not get medication for their eyes. But even that wouldn't have changed a thing.
This Kitty was already sick and he did not have time for the medication to work. He was still getting worse. He may have climbed out of the laundry basket for you, he may have even attempted to play as you say. But anybody that has cared for kittens knows full well that they can turn on a dime.
Everything that could have been done for this kitten was done. He had seen the vet, he was on medication , he was being cared for properly according to kitten protocol approved by our veterinarian, which has served us incredibly well.
His little body just said no. We don't know the reason why he was found in that parking lot alone. Did his mom abandon him because she detected a problem? Was it because he was sick? Did somebody dump him there? The only answers we truly have are that an unfixed cat had kittens - and this is the tragic outcome of that.
Telling us that we're handling this coldly, you went on the attack immediately. Everything that we said - you had a reason why it was wrong. Kind of hard to show empathy when you're being yelled at. Quite kind of you to accuse us of lying and 'hiding stuff' as well. If we wanted to 'hide stuff' we didn't have to respond to you at all. Technically you surrendered this kitten - he wasn't yours anymore. We were not obligated in any way shape or form to inform you of the outcome.
Then threatening to destroy our rescue, trash our reputation with anybody who will listen, because why? Because we did everything we could? Hurting future adoptions in the process? Therefore restricting the number of cats we can save?
Neither Shelby nor I are very aggressive people. So when we get aggressive people that come at us we don't always know what to say at the time. Everything we said was wrong and you had some reason why. We were barely given an opportunity to speak and when we did we were interrupted. So this is everything that we didn't get to say.
We are incredibly sorry for this kitten. 3 weeks is not nearly long enough. Kittens that are away from their mom at this age already have a lower survival rate than their counterparts that have a mom. Although our survival rate is very high this kitten came to us sick, on meds for 1 day. We didn't even have him long enough to get blamed. Our staff, our foster, our protocols, you can question it all. But this little boys body said no.
Rest in heaven sweet boy. You didn't deserve to die so young. 🥺
Intake photo showing him in his original condition when we took him in. Clearly not a healthy kitten.
