She’s after sounds she’s never heard before. 🎹

For pianist Yvonne Rogers, writing music starts with curiosity. She tries things out just to see what happens, and she likes when a little humor finds its way in.

Her solo shows work the same way. “I always go into it with a set of pieces I want to play,” she says, “but I try to play them a little differently each time, challenging myself to take risks and have fun with it.” We can’t wait to hear where she takes them.

Fort Hayes had an exceptional visitor.

Through our partnership, South Korean pianist and composer 류다빈 (Dabin Ryu) spent time with Fort Hayes music students, sharing her experiences as an artist and trading notes on the one thing everyone in the room had in common: a love of the music. 🎹

Yvonne Rogers plays piano like she grew up outdoors.
Her rhythm breathes. Her harmony wanders off the path and finds something better.

And many have noticed. She’s played with Tomeka Reid, Ingrid Laubrock, and Adam O’Farrill. Her new solo record, The Button Jar, was produced by Kris Davis.

She’s also a Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composers Award winner, and you can hear it in every left turn she takes.
