FREE DOCUMENTARY & DISCUSSION: Atomic People, TUESDAY August 18th 6:30PM, Nickelodeon Theatre, 1607 Main St. Columbia, SC 29201. A BBC documentary built entirely from the testimony of hibakusha, the survivors of the atomic bombings. The film doesn’t summarize history from a distance; it lets survivors speak in their own words about what they lived through, and what they’ve carried since. Running time: 90 min. Following the screening, we’ll host a moderated panel discussion with Tom Clements of Savannah River Site Watch, and Dr. Christopher Olaf Tolefson, professor of philosophy at the University of South Carolina specializing in the ethics of killing and just war theory.

In this 29-minute documentary, renowned whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg provides a powerful wakeup call about the global threat posed by nuclear weapons and how we can dramatically reduce the real and present danger of nuclear annihilation. Filmed a year before his death at age 92, Ellsberg speaks with clarity and urgency about the dangers we face, noting, ”I’ve long said that to my last breath I will be doing what I can to postpone and avert the risk of nuclear war.”
Followed by organizing discussion.

End the War Now. Arrest War Criminal Netanyahu. Stop the Genocide in Gaza.

Failing to strike a peace deal to end the war, Trump has renewed attacks on Iran, including attacks on civilian targets considered war crimes. The war remains unauthorized by Congress and illegal despite Trump's claims he can restart the clock on the War Powers Act. And no end is in sight. Meanwhile, the war criminal who sold this war to Trump, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, will be visiting the US. Under Trump's fraudulent ceasefire in Gaza, Netanyahu has continued to press a slow genocide in Gaza. Trump should be arresting this war criminal, not listening to him.

Join us weekly Saturdays at the SC State House 11am to Noon to protest the war on Iran and the ongoing genocide in Gaza.

You have until Thursday July 16th at midnight to submit your comments opposing new Plutonium Pit Production for nuclear weapons at the Savannah River Site (SRS) and the Los Alamos National Laboratory.  Sued by environmental advocacy and nuclear watchdog groups, the National Nuclear Security Agency (NNSA) has been forced to comply with a Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement (PEIS) they tried to skip out on.  This is your chance to voice your concerns about and opposition to expanded nuclear weapons production.

The NNSA is attempting to rush into production a new bomb plant to create Plutonium Pits… the cores for thermonuclear weapons... at the Savannah River Site (SRS) near Aiken, SC, repurposing the billion dollar boondoggle failed MOX Project with an even bigger multibillion dollar boondoggle estimated to cost at least $30 billion.  The NNSA claims these new plutonium pits are necessary to maintain the US nuclear weapons stockpile and won’t be used for new nuclear weapons, but experts don’t agree with either claim.  As SRS struggles to clean up the radioactive legacy of the Cold War, we could again be left “holding the bag” with transuranic radioactive waste dumped long term at the Savannah River Site.  As the Federal government’s deficit pushes our nation toward a fiscal cliff, the hefty price tag of this project could help push us over the cliff.  Finally, instead of spending money on the needs of the people… health care and education… this would waste our taxpayer money on buying unnecessary nuclear weapons that put future generations at risk.
