When a sitting president like Donald Trump is connected to racist, dehumanizing imagery targeting Barack Obama and Michelle Obama, that is not politics.
That is hate.
And hate, when it comes from powerful platforms, is dangerous.
At Building Better Communities, we don’t just talk about unity — we do the work. We organized the Caravan of Love to shine a light on South Carolina’s lack of hate-crime legislation because silence is not an option when systems fail to protect people.
Racist imagery is a modern lynching of dignity. It is meant to desensitize, to normalize cruelty, and to remind Black people that no amount of success will shield them from being reduced to stereotypes.
I reject that.
Leadership without humanity is tyranny. Power without accountability is abuse.
If you want to lead this country, you don’t get to degrade its people.
This moment demands courage, not comfort. It demands truth, not excuses. And it demands that we stop treating racism like a misunderstanding instead of what it is — a deliberate act that causes real harm.
We will continue to organize.
We will continue to speak.
And we will continue to hold leaders accountable.
Because justice doesn’t come from being polite.
It comes from standing firm.
