Cocky's Reading Express Cocky’s Reading Express is USC's award-winning literacy outreach program. Our priority is reaching students in underserved public schools.

Cocky's Reading Express is the University of South Carolina's literacy outreach program. USC students travel the state with their friend, Cocky, visiting elementary schools across South Carolina. The students read to the children, and Cocky helps the children understand the importance of life-long reading. The program primarily serves students in 4K through second grade because research shows that if children acquire strong reading skills and a love of reading by the third grade they are more likely to succeed academically and graduate on time. All the children are given books to take home, reminders of their visit from Cocky and the USC students. The USC students know they are making reading fun - one Gamecock at a time. Cocky's Reading Express is 100% funded by grants and gifts. Some of our funders include: BP America, Boeing, SCE&G, Colonial LIfe, BB&T, Nelson Mullins, and Central Carolina Community Foundation.

We are so grateful to We Are Boeing SC for their generous support and commitment to education and innovation.

Thanks to their partnership, we visited 10 Title I elementary schools across Charleston County School District throughout 2026, reaching nearly 4,500 students with our interactive program. During each visit, every student chose a book to take home and keep. These schools also received an additional 400 giveaway books, helping students continue to build their home libraries long after our visit.

Together, we put more than 8,500 books into the hands of students across the district, expanding access to high-quality books and creating more opportunities for children to read, learn, imagine, and DREAM BIG!

Thank you, Boeing, for making this work possible. We are deeply grateful for your partnership and investment in the future!

And we're back! We kicked off the new school year with a fantastic Friday morning full of reading fun at WB Goodwin Elementary!

This visit was made possible by the generous support of We Are Boeing SC. Thanks to their commitment to literacy, every student picked out a brand-new book to take home to keep.

And the reading doesn't stop there! We stocked the school's new Little Free Library impact library with 400 additional books, giving students even more opportunities to keep reading.

Together, we are building lifelong readers across Charleston!
