Session: Food Production in Arid Land
Track: Gardening 101

Nicole is a Las Vegas Native who has dedicated much of her career to teaching the Las Vegas community. Her wealth of knowledge about gardening in the Mojave is an essential contribution to her current role as a Community-Based Instructor for the Youth Horticulture Education Program at Extension.

This interactive concurrent session will help you understand that you can indeed grow food in the desert and that, with knowledge and practice, your youth garden can be productive despite the challenges.

JMG NATIONAL GROUP OF THE MONTH: OCTOBER 2026 🪴
Congratulations to the Miami County - Purdue Extension Junior Master Gardeners from Peru, IN! 🥳
Grades/Number of students in JMG Group: 10 students, 4th-6th grade
Group Leader: Courtney Schmidt, Jamie Carter, and Rachel Taylor
JMG Curriculum Utilized: JMG Handbook and LGEG
Gardens include: Vegetables, fruit, herbs, as well as other flowering and beautification plants
Memorable or favorite experiences: Every summer, we host JMG Summer Camp for kids aged grades 4-6 in our community. We usually have 10-12 kids sign up. We use the JMG curriculum and add other important people from our community, like Miami County Soil and Water (we learn about water shed and how that affects our whole community). We learn about landscaping and why bugs are important and why there are a few that are pests. JMG Summer Camp is 2 weeks of summer that these kids look forward to! This year we even learned about Barn Quilts and their history, since they are gaining popularity again.
Service Learning: At summer camp, the JMG kids plant the garden the first week (minus a few things that need to be planted before they are here), and they harvest a huge harvest the second week they are here. During the other times, we take the produce to local food banks and food pantries, so we can share the harvest with others in the community. During the week of the fair, we usually do some kind of story time in the garden so we can attract others into our space and share information about what we are doing. Our Miami County Master Gardener Association helps us with our week of JMG Summer Camp, so maybe we can help grow farmers, gardeners, and future community changers!
How the garden program benefits our kids: These kids are learning about where their food comes from, why bugs are important (and not so important), and learning to take care of what they grow to help their environment. The JMG program helps Extension Staff make sure these kids are going to be difference makers!

Have you heard about our upcoming Garden Exploration Days? The Junior Master Gardener program is teaming up with The Gardens at Texas A&M for two hands-on day camps where kids can explore, learn, and grow! 🌻🐝

🍎 October 12 – Garden to Plate
Discover how fruits and vegetables grow from seed to harvest, explore edible gardens, learn about plant care, and connect the garden to the food we eat.

🦋 October 13 – Habitat Heroes
Explore wildlife-friendly gardening and discover how pollinators, birds, and beneficial insects rely on healthy garden habitats.

Camps run from 8:30 a.m.–4 p.m. and are $75 per day or $140 for both days, with materials and supplies included.
