A huge thank you to the St. Joseph EMS and Flight Crew for their generous donation of 22 CPAP machines to VOOM Foundation!

CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machines provide steady, pressurized airflow to help patients breathe more effectively. In critical care settings, this type of non-invasive respiratory support can be especially valuable for patients experiencing breathing difficulties, helping improve oxygenation and, in appropriate cases, reducing the need for more invasive ventilation.

For VOOM, donations like this help strengthen the resources available to our medical teams and healthcare partners in Nigeria as they care for patients before, during, and after life-saving cardiac procedures. Access to dependable respiratory equipment is an important part of providing safe, comprehensive care and building stronger, more sustainable healthcare systems.

We are incredibly grateful to St. Joseph EMS and Flight Crew for supporting our mission and helping us continue to bring critical medical resources where they are needed most. 22 machines. Countless opportunities to support better care. One shared mission to save lives.

Volunteer Spotlight | Sharon Powell ❤️

Behind every successful open-heart surgery is an extraordinary team, and Sharon Powell is one of the heroes making it possible.

As an Operating Room Nurse and Scrub Technician, Sharon has volunteered on six consecutive VOOM Foundation missions to Nigeria over the past two years. She has spent countless hours training local operating room staff and often stands for 15+ hour days, remaining focused from the first patient in the OR until the last surgery is complete.

A scrub nurse is one of the surgeon's most trusted partners, preparing every instrument, maintaining a sterile field, and anticipating every step of a life-saving operation. In open-heart surgery, that teamwork can make all the difference.

Sharon's dedication doesn't end when the mission does. Throughout the year, she collects critical surgical instruments and supplies that are difficult, impossible, or too expensive to obtain in Nigeria, ensuring our teams are ready to save lives.

Thank you, Sharon, for your unwavering compassion, tireless service, and commitment to giving heart patients a second chance at life. ❤️

❤️ **Saving Lives today, Empowering Leaders Tomorrow.**

Some of the greatest acts of service happen far from home.

Several times each year, cardiothoracic surgeons Dr. Adanna Akujuo and Dr. Nkem Aziken step away from their busy practices in the United States to volunteer with the VOOM Foundation in Nigeria. They don't just perform life-saving open-heart surgeries...they invest in the future by training and mentoring Nigerian cardiothoracic surgeons alongside our partners at Dame Irene Okwuosa Memorial Hospital in Oraifite.

Their vision extends beyond every successful operation. It is to help build a sustainable open-heart surgery program that will continue saving lives long after each mission ends.

In Nigeria, fewer than 400 open-heart surgeries are performed annually in a country with a population of more than 230 million. The need is overwhelming, but through education, collaboration, and unwavering commitment, progress is being made - one patient, one surgeon, and one mission at a time.

Dr. Akujuo and Dr. Aziken exemplify what it means to serve with purpose. Their expertise is restoring hearts today while empowering the next generation of cardiac surgeons to care for countless more tomorrow.

Thank you, Dr. Akujuo and Dr. Aziken, for your leadership, compassion, and commitment to creating lasting change. Your legacy is measured not only by the lives you save but also by the surgeons you inspire and the future you help build.

❤️ Please join Dr. Akujuo & Dr. Aziken's mission of hope. Volunteer, make a life-saving donation, or share our story so together we can expand access to cardiac care across Nigeria.
