The George & Barbara Bush Foundation mourns the passing of Dick Davidson, former Chairman and CEO of Union Pacific Railroad and a dear friend of President Bush and Mrs. Bush.

Mr. Davidson’s leadership, generosity, and deep respect for President Bush helped build the meaningful relationship between Union Pacific and the Bush Foundation that continues to this day. As CEO of Union Pacific when the UP 4141 locomotive was unveiled in President Bush’s honor, he helped create a lasting tribute to a life of service, leadership, and humility. His impact will long be remembered, and our prayers are with Trish and the Davidson family.

Today, we honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our nation. Memorial Day is a time to reflect on their sacrifice, remember their courage, and express our enduring gratitude for the freedoms they helped protect.

President George H.W. Bush and Mrs. Barbara Bush believed deeply in the importance of service, duty, and honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice. As we gather with family and friends today, may we also pause to honor the fallen and the families who carry their legacy forward.

They are pictured here honoring fallen service members on Memorial Day in 1989.

Today, on Armed Forces Day, we honor the brave men and women serving in the United States Armed Forces and thank them for their dedication to our nation.

As a Navy veteran and Commander in Chief, President George H.W. Bush understood the sacrifice military service requires. In his 1989 Armed Forces Day Proclamation, he shared:

“Our Nation is strong today because the members of our Armed Forces are vigilant, active, and brave.”

We are grateful for all who serve and for their continued commitment to protecting the freedoms we hold dear.
