Former First Lady Barbara Bush often said that parents are a child's first and best teachers. That's why parent education is one of the four essential components of comprehensive family literacy. By equipping parents and caregivers with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to support learning at home, these programs help strengthen the entire family.

One of the Barbara Bush Fund for Family Literacy's inaugural grantees, [First Teachers Family Literacy Program] in Biddeford, Maine, puts Mrs. Bush's belief into practice through its Active Parenting classes, helping parents build confidence, strengthen their advocacy skills, and support their children's success.

We're proud to support programs that carry forward Barbara Bush's vision of empowering families through literacy.

For 150 years, the Texas A&M University community has answered the call to serve, lead with character, and contribute to something greater than themselves.

President George H.W. Bush believed deeply in the power of service and in what can be accomplished when people come together for the good of others. We’re proud to see that spirit reflected in the university’s newest video, which includes a glimpse of President Bush on campus and our CEO, Alice Gonzalez Yates, welcoming viewers to the George H.W. Bush Presidential Center.

We are saddened by the passing of Don Wilson, Seventh Archivist of the United States, and a trusted advisor and close friend to President and Mrs. Bush. His leadership was instrumental in establishing the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum in College Station, and his contributions helped preserve President Bush’s legacy for generations to come.

Don leaves behind a remarkable legacy of service, leadership, and devotion to country in the finest tradition of American public service. Our thoughts are with his devoted wife Patsy, his family, and all who knew and loved him.

Family literacy comes to life when parents and children read, learn, and play together!

These photos, shared by our inaugural Barbara Bush Fund for Family Literacy grantees, offer a glimpse of that work in action. As part of the Fund's launch, the George & Barbara Bush Foundation awarded inaugural grants to First Teachers Family Literacy Program in Biddeford, Maine; Briya Public Charter School in Washington, D.C.; and Achieve Plant City in Plant City, Florida.

We're proud to support organizations that are strengthening families and communities through literacy, and we look forward to sharing more stories from their work.

On July 26, 1990, President George H.W. Bush signed the Americans with Disabilities Act into law, marking a major step forward in protecting the rights of Americans with disabilities.

The landmark legislation helped remove barriers in employment, public spaces, transportation, communications, and other areas of daily life, expanding access and opportunity for millions of people across the country. At the signing ceremony, President Bush described the ADA as a “declaration of equality,” reflecting his belief that every American should be able to participate fully in our nation’s civic, social, and economic life.

More than three decades later, the ADA remains one of President Bush’s most enduring achievements and a powerful part of his legacy of service, dignity, and inclusion.

Thirty-five years ago, President George H.W. Bush signed the National Literacy Act into law, strengthening our nation’s commitment to literacy and lifelong learning.

Mrs. Bush’s lifelong passion for literacy was rooted in her belief that every person deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed. Today, the George & Barbara Bush Foundation is keeping that legacy alive through the Barbara Bush Fund for Family Literacy, which supports programs that help parents and children learn together and build stronger futures.

By investing in family literacy, we are carrying forward President and Mrs. Bush’s shared commitment to expanding opportunity, strengthening families, and creating lasting change in communities across the country.
