Wear a piece of Long Island furniture history! 🌟

Our limited edition enamel pins are based on the star of our current exhibition: a high chest made about 1740 in what’s now Flushing, Queens. Crafted largely as wedding presents, these fashionable high chests stored valuable household textiles. They were passed down lovingly in families across generations. This high chest, part of the PLI collection, is signed by a member of Oyster Bay’s Townsend family. ✒️

The black walnut tree in front of Sherwood-Jayne is a great place for a photo op 📸

If you’re participating in the Long Island History Hunt, this tree – which is likely around 300 years old – is part of the selfie challenge!

Hear from Alexa - one of our amazing Gallery Guides - about her favorite piece of furniture in our Wood & Water exhibition.

Standing at almost 7 & 1/2 feet tall, this desk & bookcase was likely made by Asa Baker in Queens County around 1800.

Follow along while try to piece together the stories of craftspeople - like Baker - on Long Island in the 17th-19th centuries.

🏚️ Joseph Lloyd Manor

Visit the house built for merchant Joseph Lloyd in 1767. Here, Jupiter Hammon, one of America's first published Black writers, composed his best-known works while enslaved by the Lloyd family.

🏚️ Sherwood-Jayne Farm House
🗓️ Saturdays: 11am, 12pm, 1pm, 2pm
The Jayne family lived in this saltbox house (ca. 1730), including William Jayne II, a prominent Loyalist during the Revolutionary War. The Jaynes maintained the farm for over 150 years before selling it in 1908 to Howard Sherwood, a historic preservation advocate and founder of Preservation Long Island.

🏚️Custom House
🗓️ Saturdays-Sundays: 11am, 12pm, 1pm, 2pm
Located on Main Street in Sag Harbor, Custom House (ca. 1770) was the home of Henry Packer Dering, one of Sag Harbor’s first Customs Collectors. Tours bring to life the bustling history of this seafaring community and the Dering family's place in it.

📢Two of our historic properties are open this July 4th holiday weekend!

🌟Tour Joseph Lloyd Manor in Lloyd Harbor.🌟 Completed in 1767 for Joseph Lloyd (1716–1780), and occupied by the British during the Revolutionary War, it is where Jupiter Hammon (1711–before 1806), one of the first published African American writers, authored his most significant works about the moral conflicts of slavery and freedom in the early United States.

🌟Visit our Exhibition Gallery located in the Old Methodist Church in Cold Spring Harbor.🌟 Our new exhibition, “Wood and Water: Furniture on Long Island, 1660–1860,” organized in commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, explores two centuries of the region’s history through furniture and related decorative arts.

In honor of Juneteenth, we are offering free tours of Joseph Lloyd Manor this Sunday, June 21st at 11:00am and 1:00pm.

Join us and reflect on the legacy of Jupiter Hammon, who became the first published Black American poet while enslaved in the 1700s.

This event is FREE and open to the public — no advance registration required.

🔥Watch colonial historic hearth cooking demonstrations by a local food historian
🪵 View traditional woodworking demonstrations led by regional artisans
🎶 Enjoy live 18th-century music performances throughout the day

We have partnered with the Sag Harbor Historical Museum to host these activities at the 18th-century Custom House, which will be open for self-guided tours.

Bring your Suffolk County 250th Passport Book to receive a commemorative Custom House stamp—one of the featured Long Island historic sites in the Passport Book.

While you’re in the village, be sure to visit the Sag Harbor Whaling & Historical Museum across the street to experience an 18th-century Continental Army encampment and reenactments of the 1777 Meigs Raid (also known as the Battle of Sag Harbor), when Long Island patriots fought back British troops.
