Community Voices from bioRxiv & medRxiv > bioRxiv Affiliate Cathy Abbott
To promote the rapid dissemination of new research, bioRxiv and medRxiv depend on Affiliates who help screen manuscripts and are enthusiastic voices in support of preprints. Affiliates are active scientists who volunteer their time to quickly determine whether submitted articles include biological research and do not have the potential to cause harm to the public. Cathy Abbott is a Professor at the University of Edinburgh researching on mutations in eEF1A2 that cause epilepsy, autism and intellectual disability and genome editing for studying neurodevelopmental disorders and neurodegeneration. Cathy recently became a bioRxiv Affiliate to help us screen manuscripts. She loves playing a role in an initiative which has really changed the face of publishing in the life sciences, and knowing that she’s helping put all the work out into the world for everyone’s benefit.

On bioRxiv and medRxiv, you can publicly ask questions, offer feedback, and share reviews right on the preprint page – through the “Reviews and Context” widget on the right-hand side of the page. Help authors improve their work and connect with the community in just a few minutes.

Take a look at this preprint by Georgelin et al. https://doi.org/10.1101/2025.03.23.644840 which was recently reviewed through PREreview to see an example of a community-organized group that reviewed a preprint and gave feedback to authors. The rapid sharing of science by posting preprints on bioRxiv and medRxiv allows authors to incorporate this feedback and improve their manuscript. You’ll be able to see other community reviews by clicking on the “Community Reviews” link of the new “Reviews and Context” widget on the right-hand side column of the preprint page (or at the bottom of the page, on mobile view). Once you click on the link or icon, the review will appear on the dashboard that opens on the right.

bioRxiv and medRxiv are committed to providing free and unrestricted access to all articles posted on the server, not only to human readers but also for machine analysis. Therefore, preprint metadata is made available in a machine-readable way via a number of dedicated RSS feeds and APIs and is always free to access. Bulk access to the full text of bioRxiv articles for the purposes of text and data mining is available via a dedicated Amazon S3 resource, which operates under a requester pays bucket model. This charge to the user is intended for covering the cost of the service and is not a source of revenue for the preprint servers, and in most cases it is negligible.

To promote the rapid dissemination of new research, bioRxiv and medRxiv depend on Affiliates who help screen manuscripts. Affiliates are active scientists who volunteer their time to quickly determine whether submitted articles include biological research and do not have the potential to cause harm to the public.

Sophien Kamoun has been a bioRxiv Affiliate since 2013. He is a Group Leader at The Sainsbury Laboratory in Norwich, UK, and a globally recognized expert in plant-pathogen interactions and plant immunity. He is also a passionate advocate for open science, including open data, transparent peer review, and the use of preprints to accelerate the dissemination of research. Sophien considers his Affiliate role as a uniquely rewarding experience of bringing new research to the world. He has enjoyed being a part of bioRxiv’s growth from its initiation to where it is today as a mainstream platform for biological research.

Every preprint on bioRxiv and medRxiv has associated metrics for on-site activity and external references. These are accessible through the “Metrics” tab on the preprint page, below the DOI. They include monthly preprint views and downloads and the Altmetric “donut”, which aggregates external mentions (e.g., twitter/X, Bluesky, blogs, etc).

To promote the rapid dissemination of new research, bioRxiv and medRxiv depend on Affiliates who help screen manuscripts. Affiliates are active scientists who volunteer their time to quickly determine whether submitted articles include biological research and do not have the potential to cause harm to the public. Kenichi Tsuda has been a bioRxiv Affiliate since 2023. He is a Professor at the Huazhong Agricultural University researching the interaction between plants and microbes at the molecular and global levels using molecular genetics, genomics and evolutionary approaches. Ken considers that being an Affiliate is a great opportunity to contribute to the scientific community and to open science. He also enjoys reading papers a few days before they go online!
