Eagle Dock Environmental Education Program

Eagle Dock Environmental Education Program Maintaining awareness about our precious environment. We succeeded. Step Two is provide educational opportunities to study what we have.

Many members of Eagle Dock Community Beach believe it is important to educate young and old alike about the rich but fragile environment we enjoy at our beach. As a result it was decided to see if we could attract a nesting pair of osprey, sought of a "canary in the mine" approach to test our environment. This is a work in progress. We intend to offer programs to enrich our membership. This page

will be used to broadcast our programs and collect the evidence that we doing what we have set out to do.

The crazy weather is on my mind! What does this mean for the return trip from Venezuela for the osprey wintering there, including I think, the crowd of osprey who have fledged out of the Eagle Dock Osprey nest? It is February 4th. The erliest return to Long Island and to our nest was early March. Based on what I've heard and seen, winter is not yet on its way out in the Northeast and early March doesn't seem like a good bet. Actually, the birds know better because they will not make that long journey without a good understanding food will be available along the way and on Long Island. So, we will watch and see what they tell us!

Somehow, this is beautiful. Off in the distance, across the mudflat, is the Eagle Dock Osprey Nest, solemnly awaiting the return of our osprey come spring in Cold Spring Harbor.

And so, it appears, my friends, another osprey season in the northeast has come and gone, at least for us at Eagle Dock. The nest gets used by others, as we have learned by watching, crows, sparrows, gulls, egrets, cormorants, kingfishers, as we have seen this year, a sharp-shinned hawk, according to chatter James, and even the Bald Eagle pair back in 2013. A lot of that is upcoming because the "owners" of the nest have departed. It's kind of like "squatting" that we have here in the US! At some point though, I will direct the camera on our gate to monitor possible human intruders to our beach.

Food for thought!

🪺 The Osprey Family: Nature’s Fast-Forwarded Blueprint for Us All
In the span of just a few months, an osprey pair builds a home, raises a family, and lets their young take flight. It’s a compressed but vivid portrait of what we call the nuclear family—played out not in decades, but in days.
From the moment the nest is built, each parent knows their role. The male hunts, defends, and delivers. The female broods, shades, and teaches. Together, they create a rhythm of care and cooperation that feels deeply familiar.
We watch the eggs arrive, the chicks hatch, and the feeding frenzy begin. We see the parents adjust—less hovering, more coaching—as the young test their wings. And then, one by one, the fledglings leap. Not recklessly, but with preparation. With trust. With the invisible scaffolding of love and labor beneath them.
It’s a story of partnership. Of sacrifice. Of letting go.
And maybe, just maybe, it’s a reminder: that the family unit—however we define it—is not just about staying together. It’s about building something strong enough to launch from.

I'm double posting for those of you who have not heard we've created a page just dedicated to our Eagle Dock osprey. This happened just moments ago I'm told by watching friend from England. That's Bob. He's the only male on the nest. Maybe he wants to get away from those girls, Anna and Telise?

Worth sharing.

Greetings friends of Eagle Dock Osprey and our Environmental Education Program. We have a bragging rights challenge for all to enjoy. Many of you already know Anna from the Eagle Dock Foundation Live Osprey cam. For those that do not, she is the beauty that was rescued from being entangled in fishing line that was wrapped around a stick which would have meant almost certain death come fledging time. Well, that time is approaching. We would like to invite all who are interested to have a guess at predicting when Anna will fledge. Anna hatched on June 12th and is quickly approaching her fledge date. We invite you to the Eagle Dock Foundation Live Osprey cam chat on YouTube to have a guess. Please offer a date and nest time you feel Anna may take to the sky. We will record guesses until the 6th of August, 5:00PM (17:00:00) nest time. Good luck, have fun and learn a lot! More info to follow. One of these little chicks is Anna! Guess who?
