After 99 years as a New York State trout hatchery, we opened as a non-profit educational center dedicated to educating our visitors about the freshwater ecosystems of New York. We are proud to have the largest living collection of New York State freshwater reptiles, fishes and amphibians. Visitors can tour our two aquarium buildings and eight outdoor ponds, feed the hungry trout, and try our “Catch & Keep” fishing.

The bog turtle is North America’s smallest turtle. This turtle is not only tiny, but it's rare as well. They are listed as an endangered species in New York and are federally threatened.

Part of the reason for their rarity has to do with invasive plants such as purple loosestrife blocking out vital sunlight from bog turtle basking and nesting sites. The lack of sunlight inhibits the turtles from properly regulating their body temperature and doesn’t warm eggs enough to survive.

Channel catfish have deeply forked tails, and this is what differentiates them when compared to other catfish. When young, channel cats are a bluish grey and have spots. As they grow, they become darker grey, and the spots fade.

These catfish like large bodies of open water and large streams in which they
feed and spawn. During spawning season, the male builds and guards a nest, which he continues to guard until after the fry have passed the yolk sac stage.

Today is Endangered Species Day.

A reminder that the incredible animals we share this planet with need our help now more than ever. Habitat loss, pollution, and climate change continue to threaten species around the world, but small actions can make a big difference.

Meet the bog turtle, North America’s smallest turtle and one of its most endangered. These tiny turtles play an important role in wetland ecosystems, but habitat loss continues to threaten their survival.

Protecting their home protects our future too.
